I've been listening to the radio whilst working in the kitchen and there are advertisements on there about the census saying you can fill it in as early as you like. :blue thumb:

Did ours tonight and bypassed a good few of the questions that come under the heading of "NOYFB" - basics of info only and enough to avoid a fine. If they don't know it by now with all the internet data, taxes, NI, phone data, CCTV, insurance etc etc then they will never know it...

Not heard a thing about the census. No official letter no adverts on Tv or internet.

I received the letter yesterday and glancing at it quickly, nearly put it in the bin as it was addressed to 'The Householder' and thought it was the usual bit of rubbish.
I did wonder at them requesting it be done online- I baulked at that, why not just send everyone a form? Not everyone has facilities for online working as we found in the home schooling debacle.
As someone pointed out, the onus is placed on us then to go through the frustrations of calling them... another expense.
But it's the law,so we have to do it.
By the way, when was the last one?

I don't know if you have seen the series "A House Through Time" with the historian David Olusoga. The research on the family's through time is outstanding, they do use the census information quite a lot. Some heart-breaking stories on it, life was so hard before WW1.

Yes @HarryS I've seen all of them , I find it all so fascinating. It was on the 1901 census that I discovered that my Mum had another Uncle, who sadly didn't live beyond a couple years. I just wish I had done her family tree before she passed away as she never knew about him. I also found out via a census back in the 1800s that my great great grandfather remarried after losing my great great grandmother at a very young age ( 34) and ran a London pub. I even looked online and found old pics of it, sadly now gone.
I also found online maps that you can add to layer by layer as time passed ....so fascinating!!! I could literally see how London grew from tiny villages to how we ( almost) know it today . All our family on both sides were Londoners.

I even used the same maps for our own area and saw when our house appeared over 100 years ago.Our whole area was a vast woodland with lakes!!
I love looking back in time. Oddly enough two of our sons now live in the area where my other great, great grandmother had to raise her family of 5 children all by herself after my g,g,grandfather died ,she was a truly amazing lady and took on numerous jobs to ensure they had food on the table and shoes on their feet...life must have been so very hard for her, how I would have loved to have known her.

We just did ours online. I find it fascinating that The Teenager struggles with questions such as "what is your national identity". She simply doesn't have one, or has too many of them.

This is the new world, or rather, the old world is back. For most of modern history people have not identified themselves by nationalities, but by rulers they serve, or local communities. So you might have identified yourself as Seville born, subject of XX King/ Majesty/ Empire.

I'm also pleased that this census gives a lot of flexibility to describe your gender, sexual orientation and other such matters that used to be black and white affairs. It's very important for people who can't just select A or B.

The winds of change are reassuring me that the society is going towards more accepting rather than dividing future. :)
