Lily pest

Hi everyone just noticed something has attacked my lilies in pots, I'm thinking squirrel?

 

Even a few slugs can cause that level of damage... have you checked under the pots for them hiding there?

 

You would have a dead squireel on your hands if it was one of them which ate the Lily shoots. Lilies are poisonous to most mammals.

 

There were a few under there, I didn't realise they could do that much damage.

I didn't realise that, so it looks like the slugs then.

 

Even the pollen from the flowers is deadly to Cats.

Ought to have added, I remove the stigma (the pollen bearing parts) of the Lily flowers. It makes the flowers last longer and it means that our cats cannot pick up the pollen by brushing past the flowers and then washing it off themselves.

 

Some lily bulbs are eaten in Asia, for example Lilium davidii, L lancifolium and L brownii.

 

Having to rethink about the slugs, found one of the flower heads about 6 foot away behind the trellis and a couple of leaves in one of the hanging baskets

 

Yes, they'd have to be pretty clever slugs to take the leaves
Have you got flower buds showing already then? That's early - mine are just looking like asparagus spears.

 

A fox dug up and ate all my daffodil bulbs in a pot last winter, I thought they were a bit toxic.
Just a thought.
If it were a fox I'd expect some digging to have gone on as well though.

 

Buds are there but not full formed yet. Lily pretty woman.

 

I've not grown any lilies for some years, mainly due to pests, notably the lily beetle. I do love them, paticularly the fragrant ones. Maybe next year I'll begin a collection again.
Any advice, regarding the best bulbs to start with?

 

Again today, in another pot, I'm certain we don't have a fox, I've had a crow in and around the pots but I don't think it's that. I've got some mesh I'm going to make a temporary cage.
