IMG_0557.JPG Half way up the drive lives this thorny specimen.

IMG_0558.JPG The red berries are edible, and it rarely needs water. Any ideas of its identity would be appreciated.

Looking at images I think you´re very close, though my fruit are lozenge shaped and single, all the pics online are of round berries in clumps.
      Possibly a southern variant ?

I would say it is a Carissa, the Natal Plum. I just planted seeds this week. I had one some years ago ... compare the flowers and fleshy leaves ...

There seem to be quite a few different species. Giri's matches the images for Carissa macrocarpa, whereas the one I've just planted in a pot is thornless with 'fluffy' flowers. Yours is different again, @Victoria. It will be interesting to compare fruits when they arrive :)

As with the recent footy, I regard it as a draw. Many thanks to France and Portugal, I can now impress my better half with casual references to Carissa macrocarpa, though mildly disappointed that I can´t call it the "Burning Bush."
I have a Strawberry Tree, the fruit of which I have been warned against. Now, nothing gets me more interested in something than being warned against it. (sex, loose women, drugs, the Way Forward was clear ). Vague references to altered mental states are hinted at, and since hallucinogenics made me the man I am today, (whimsical, and rather wayward) I hope to come to a better understanding of this tree.
I´ve tried sitting under my Bhodi tree, but no luck so far ...

I believe mine was the C macrocarpa as are the seeds I planted a few days ago. You can make jam with the fruits.
