    Hey all,

Hoping for some advice if I may...

I've got two patches of grass either side of my path which were treated with weedkiller (the sort with glyphosate) which totally destroyed the grass as well.

The soil around where I live in Bedfordshire is very heavy, as you'll see by the standing water. What is the best course of action to remedy this mess?

Any help very much appreciated 20210116_102838.jpg 20210116_102818.jpg

I'd keep off the lawn at the moment it to wet and you'll be compacting the soil even more, if you do have a dry day you can spike the lawn with a garden fork at least 4 -6inch down.

I do lawn care on my lawn around beginning / mid of March weather permitting . Give the lawn a good rake to remove moss / thatch - spike the entire lawn - over seed any bare patches - top dress with sharp sand ( you can add a bit of top soil or compost something like 4-1 if you wish ) brush it around into the holes and wait and see .

Never use weedkiller on the lawn , they are special selective weedkillers that wont damage the grass , they normally say lawn weedkiller on the bottle.

I can see some broad leaf grass in there as well it up to you on the quality of the lawn , if you don't like it you'll have to hand weed it . You can also hand weed that prunella ( mid of pic ) while you are at it they can take a couple of application with lawn weedkiller sometimes .

I have a similar situation and I am a proper noob, the kind that lets the garden go out of control and then fret about not doing anything about it.

        Here are some pics

Some questions from me if thats ok,

        1. Can I use a dethatcher/electronic rake right now (July/August) to deal with all of the moss?
        2. Can I use lawn weedkiller that just kills the weed and not the grass? Which one is good and any application guidelines?
        3. Patches are terrible not sure what to do
        4. Lots of weird weeds, some that look like grass but are thicker, can the same weed killer be used?
        5. Bumpy lawn, lots of dips and uneven hard surfaces, best way to smooth it out?
        6. I usually do mulch mowing, is that a bad thing?

Hi @Ali Naqvi , your lawn is in need of some tlc I can see quite a bit of coarse grass in it which is upto you if it bothers you are not .

        1. No scarifying or dethatching at the moment this job is done Spring or September / October , it will do to much damage to the lawn at this time of year.

        2. Yes you can use a lawn weed killer , just look on ebay etc for any formula brand like weedol

        3. Lawn need overseeding in Autumn this would be done after scarifying

        4. refer to my first sentence, no lawnweed killer will not target this grass , manually remove or try and discourage it by cutting into it with a knife or verticutter. if it really bothers you and the lawn is covered kill the whole lawn and start again.

        5. Small divots can be fill with top dressing , bumps need to be removed .

        6. Mulch mowing can be good and bad. It feeds the lawn for one which is a good thing and ideal with the recent warm spell. but it increase thatch will can be bad if they is to much of it, this is more of a problem on a fine lawn which is well manicured.

        7. Looking at the lawn I'd reckon you have a compaction problem , using a garden fork spike the whole lawn down to at least 10cm down. I do this job after scarifying but before overseeding.
