Log Roll Edging

I have had a troll around the forum and found that this subject has been discussed a fair few times.


I was thinking of using log roll to enclose the flower bed nearest the shed. It would also carry on around the corners just to the top and the bottom of the shot.

Ideally would like one that I can bury deep enough to act as a liner for the path.

Other posts suggest that it is tricky to use. Any comments would be welcomed before I commit to buying anything.

Im replacing my log rolls, with more solid 6x2 treated timbers and fixing them in with sleeper spikes. The log rolls just look poor after a winter or two

I like the idea of lawn and border edging made from recycled rubber.

So far, after 4-5 years, found log rolls to be fine though before fitting we lined the inner side thats below soil level with some thick polythene.
For straight runs we used a length of 2x1 treated timber screwed to the inner side to hold it evenly.

 

I have used log rolls in a couple of places. They do rot possible after 5 years, but is that a bad thing? Its far better than using plastic in a garden.
I have also used bamboo roll edging, now that rotted very quickly.

 

My log rolls have lasted 5/6 years before replacing. I need to replace a whole border now about 6 metres long but the taller 250mm rolls aren't available around here.

 

I made mine out of concrete. Used a split drain pipe, filled it up and jobs a goodun
I must get round to painting them.

 

I have recently bought a tin of bitumen paint. Would painting the bottom half of the log with that help slow down the rot?
