Can't imagine what bird would have a beak long enough to do such damage! Heron?

I'm thinking that it might be a possible fungus disease, or even parasites.

Hi don't think they are we still find old food that we take out in the morning floating about..
A family member said fish don't need feeding in the winter months as they become idle don't know if this is correct but she does have goldfish and koi carp

they tend to stock up before winter, on my fishery once the water temps drop carp tend to stop feeding but other fish continue like perch, chub and pike. Use to love fishing the River Thame for chub and pike in the winter months.

I've never fed my goldfish through the winter, they seem to go very sluggish as the water temperature drops and hide up under the weed a lot of the time.

Mine are still eating food ATM.
