Heat pumps are, and have been widely used in Finland for decades. Obviously, the heat difference in and above the ground is significant in the winter, and the houses are very well insulated.

My favourite geothermic set up however is in Iceland that is self sufficient in bananas. :biggrin:Regardless that the island is cold and dark, there is a lot of heat underground. A bit too much if you prefer a volcano/geyser -free garden, but in general it's a good idea to develop solutions to tap into that free, consistent source of heat.

I quite agree - but it's the cost of the free version that bothers me :heehee:

OK, now I start to believe in shortages.

We did a day trip to IKEA, with modest needs of buying a couple of their excellent santoku chopping knives, a basket and a rack to hold pans plus copious amounts of herring.

Walking through the showroom I noticed that lint rollers must be in fashion. They had huge crates of them everywhere... and surprisingly little anything else. The knife shelf displayed numbered models 1- 12, but only a couple of packs of small fruit knives were actually for sale. No pan holder racks.

I saw a display basket I liked, but on the shelves there was only a thin spread of foldable boxes.

The worst of horrors materialised in the food store- the herring section was filled with cans of Coke and Sprite. No herring in IKEA, the sky is falling! :yikes:

On a related note, apparently it's not a good idea to have a lint roller next to a jigsaw puzzle one is doing. :old:

Back on the subject of heat pumps.

Two years ago our gas boiler was packing up so that is when I looked into heat pumps. The quotes I got, including new rads (necessary) and making good, were 9k - 11k. The cost of a top of the range gas boiler (Vaillant) was quoted as £1,100 installed and the system drained down and refilled.

          Guess which we chose?

Changing the subject now, are we? Whilst the North East is in the grips of the worst IKEA herring shortage in living memory? And what if the stocks are not back by Christmas? Then what! I just ask! Then What! :yikes:

But yes, the pricing is ridiculous and will not come down until the technology and the industry are main stream with probably some heavy subsidising from the government. Solar panels are on the road to that and things like LED lamps that were high tech with a price tag to match not so long ago, are now bought for pennies.

The unfortunate reality is that fossil fuels will be either made illegal or priced out soon rather than later, there are no options. If the "new" alternatives don't catch up in affordable pricing and supply, the standard of living we know now will no longer be the same.

It's a big change and it's happening now. However, we are a resilient lot, just imagine that we were recently told it's illegal to leave your house or meet your friends, and look at us now. :)

Our solar panels do a much better job than crowding round a sucked Polo Mint.

                  Priceless...

A Conservative ex-minister has urged the government to "tell people they must not eat so much" in an effort to stop them getting "grossly overweight".

I think I heard somewhere that the UK creates 0.9% of the worlds greenhouse gasses.

Are they really serious that we can make a difference.:roflol:

Something suspicious going on here. Answer...don't let him back in the country...

The elder brother of the Manchester Arena bomber has "taken the coward's way out" by leaving the country, families of the victims have said.

I see he is yet another brother of the bomber, we import these people all the time, and then wonder why this kind of thing happens.

Totally agree, any person that is at risk to the public and/or supports terrorism should be stripped of their UK citizenship.
The 'Begum' woman that want's to return should be kept out.
The message should be clear to any others here that once they go to support isis, they stay gone.
