Thanks. I didn't realise bulb size was so important. I've seen advertised on reputable online sites saying 'large bulbs' and thought it was just a way of selling more bulbs.

Probably too late for the O.P. now, and a bit late for anyone planting crocuses, but I thought this 70% off bulbs offer sounded good for anyone wanting to buy a lot of bulbs and take a chance on them coming up in the spring from such a late planting. Of course there will be postage and packing charges too.

If I had a big space for planting a lot of crocuses I might be tempted to chance that they might not flower properly for an extra year. It is mid December, so I don't know if they would flower this coming spring.

This one the seller says stands up well to winter weather and dies back gracefully after flowering, which would be amazing as I have noticed that crocuses can get very badly weatherbeaten especially by rain. And a downside of spring bulbs is messy leaves that persist for ages.

They will probably flower because the flower is already formed inside the bulb or corm. The thing to remember is that they might have dried out a lot in the meantime.

Today I picked up some 50p packets of bulbs from Poundland. One is 12 Crocuses "Species mixed" and the other is 5 red Tulips. The Tulips look lovely on the packet picture, and both Crocus and Tulip packets say plant August to December. The Crocuses it says will flower February to March, and the Tulips April to May.

They are starting to sprout already. They look healthy.

It is only early January, and at 50p a packet seemed like a chance worth taking.

Poundland did have other kinds of bulbs too.

I planted mine immediately in pots by the door. A nice big display where people sit would be lovely. Nothing really lost, the Crocuses will probably come up next year if not this spring, and I read that it is ok to plant Tulips late.

There is no "latest" with them. Unless the ground is frozen solid it really doesn't matter when you put them there.
They might not become as beautiful as they could be when planted at a "wrong" time, but even that will right itself after another season.

The crocus bulbs that I bought from Poundland in January for 50p, half price, have all come up and two of them are flowering, others have lots of buds. Nice feast for early pollinating insects hopefully.

The tulips have all come up too, but slightly behind tulips that I planted back in late autumn which are now flowering.
