Looks to have been overwatered and the roots have rotted.

You could try lifting it out of the pot to help the root ball dry out quicker, it just might recover ..

And again. Don't know if I should start a new thread, but daughter sent this photo of - I think - Flaming Flamingo, which also appear to be in distress. She wonders what went wrong here and
          whether it can be rescued.

Looks like it has dried out. Try cutting out all the dead brown growth .There appears to be some fresh young leaves at the bottom , these should continue to grow and more will follow.
Water sparingly in the winter , allowing the surface of the compost to dry out between watering. Feed with Baby bio liquid feed March to September and keep compost moist. .:)

And again. Thinking I should be on a retainer. What should or shouldn't be done with it, do you
                think?

Looks like you went right from underwatering to overwatering.

I had that problem so now I only do bottom feeding. Water goes in the saucer and it takes what it wants. I think

And again! Now my daughter tells me that some of the plants she keeps outside her apartment in/on the balcony are forming a covering of moss.

                  Any comments/advice apprecited, as always.

I've got a few container plants outside with moss growing on the surface of the compost. It looks OK and I guess when the weather warms up it might work well for moisture retention.
It looks good with my ferns.
But if it gets out of hand or daughter doesn't like the appearance it can be easily ripped out (depending on the plant type) and replaced with a nice bag of grit.

My daughter would like to know what the black (bottom) and white (top) spots are and what can be done about them. Also the name of the plant, which she has just inherited.

                    Many thanks....
