Makes you kind of wonder what it was before it was a railway station.:biggrin:

I met up with friends in London earlier this month, spotted these in the Victoria Embankment gardens, nothing too special but they appear to be newly planted:

I'll be interested to see how these Ensetes fare during the winter, I expect OK being so close to the Thames and all the concrete mass creates a big storage heater:

        Here's your answer :blue thumb:

This was one of the questions I set in my Obscure Quiz for GC some years ago (I'm a mine of useless information so I'm pleased there's a purpose to some of it :heehee:)

The 300 bedroom Midland Grand Hotel opened in London on the 5th May 1873. The completed building had used 60 million bricks and 9,000 tons of ironwork including polished columns of fourteen different British granites and limestone. The hotel closed in 1935 and became an office. It survived the bombings of World War II and became a listed building in the 1960’s but was closed down in the 1980’s after failing its Fire Certificate. It has been restored by English Heritage and its owners, and is open to the public and also has guided tours.

What is now the name of the building and what other famous building is it the front part of?

… St Pancras Chambers and St Pancras Station

St Pancras Station was at the rear and was completed in 1868. I remember it well :old: :roflol:

Thanks to @longk for the lovely photos of, and @shiney for the info on St. Pancras Renaissance London Hotel. What a gorgeous building! Architecture is another area I'd like to research and study more, but never seem to find the time to. I'm 43 and there's simply not enough time to practically study all the history that interests me! :dunno: Here in Notts we have the work of architect Watson Fothergill to enjoy scattered around the region, I still can't believe the beautiful Black Boy Hotel was replaced with bloody Primark!

British Rail wanted to demolish it around that time, luckily it was saved by a campaign from a tough lady, who can remember her without googling ?

There are some old building that need protecting and should be restored.
That is definitely one of them.

Please sir? Me sir! :blue thumb:

I met Anne (can't remember her surname) around 1961 and remember her campaigning sometime around 1965 (remember that because we were sorting out our wedding then). The main publicity came from Sir John Betjeman.

I suspect that the loss of life in constructing it may have been considerably higher than we are used to today though!

They've been there at least a couple of years now. The beds were recently cleared, dug over and a top dressing added. Thousands of tulip bulbs are planted there now.

The competition for the design of it was announced after work on the station had started so it was all a little lastminute.com!

Really good pictures :dbgrtmb: but I find it a bit sad as it brings back memories of how it looked before the modern skyline was there. I was at school and college up there. :noidea:

I also remember places such as the original Gardiner's Corner (correct spelling ) with some info from me in this thread

I kinda appreciate where you're coming from but as someone who has no nostalgia (read history) for London in that time I do like the way that the old merges with the new sometimes.

Myn other two favourite buildings (so far) are the Trellick Tower and the thamesside elevation of Charing cross Station.

Mixed feelings regarding the old and new. I have so many fond memories of years back as both parents were Londoners so as all the extended family lived there we spent a lot of time there. My last remaining relative ( Dad's brother) who still lived there sadly passed away earlier this year. Old but very happy memories remain.

Now we are building new ones, just like the new skylines being built. All 3 sons have made it there home now for the last 10 years. I have enjoyed seeing the new London emerge, the contemporary buildings are like a breathe of fresh air.:)
