We have recently had a pallet load of Strulch. It is very easy to apply, and seems (not been down that long) very effective as a weed suppressant. Am about to order another pallet

I know this is an old thread but I have started using Strulch and find it good to use. It is mineralised straw and as well as providing a good mulch is supposed to keep slugs and snails away from the plants. It is supposed to be organic too, not that that bothers me.
It has a beautiful smell, just like Holland House aromatic pipe tobacco and it is nice to handle.

I've seen Strulch used on the gardens at RHS Wisley and thought it looked good, but it was too expensive for me to experiment with. If it lasted longer than a couple of years it might be worth it.

Would it be unwise to put strulch down at this time of year or should I wait until the autumn?

I have no experience of strulch but the idea is just the same as any mulch, apply now to suppress weeds and conserve moisture.

Does it cost more than the compost I make and use as a mulch? What are the benefits? Why have I never heard of it before? Oh yeah, because I'm tight and don't like spending money!

That translates very easily in my head. :nonofinger: Wash your mouth out with soap and water!

I think I shall continue using my own compost. That costs £0 per ton. :heehee:

I use strulch for my fruit trees and larger pots. It's great for suppression of weeds, keeps my pots from drying out and enriches the soil but if you can make your own for a fraction of the price then Happy days.

We make at least two ton a year and it takes a lot of hard work digging it out and spreading it. Nowadays we have to have someone in to do our heavy work so it does cost us something :noidea:

I only bought a few bags of strulch due to having no actual beds in my garden so only needed it for the pots and it is long lasting, very easy to use and looks nice too. Added bonus is it smells lovely too!
