Mine remain open during rain and some does get in, I think that may be the reason why I got Blight inside my greenhouse last year. I noticed blight started on the plants under the vents, so you're right it is a concern.

      Hi,

With that Vitax shading you can apply it in different densities according to how much you dilute it plus you can always add a second coat.

They say the most effective shading for stopping the heat getting in is external with a 25mm air gap between the shading material and the glass/twinwall.
You could look at some of the modern shading materials that have more reflecive properties, but not cheap.

Have visited a couple of smaller commercial orchid growers and their greenhouses have thick white wash on the glass all year around.

In a way you have given yourself a bit of a problem with a south facing orchid house !
You can use a humidifier but as soon as a vent is opened out it all goes.

If using a portable air con unit, its much more effective if you have the unit outside so the hot air is expelled there and connect up its cold air outlet to a 150mm+ duct and pipe that goes into the greenhouse .

@NigelJ cloth should be hanged outside with air gap. This provides not only shading but also creates heat barrier from sun. Otherwise your cloth hanged inside will take heat itself and spread it inside.
Always something is in bloom - even in winter time!

@ricky101 - youre totally right everywhere :) The problem is that I knew about this amazing situation - south facing greenhouse - beforehand...sadly, there was no other location in our garden to build it. Humidifier is good but then as soon as your Air con will turn on - boom, everything is gone as well. Cloud forest plants loves humidity, no matter what temperature!
And yes, portable air cons has pipe witch should go outside to make a difference. Its good that polycarbonate is easy to cut!

To be honest I am so afraid of this summer, plants came to greenhouse only in the middle of autumn, so they never lived there in a full summer swing..

I used to use that white paint-on stuff but it never cleaned off easily. I now use old bamboo blinds from freecycle I drape over the roof. They can be taken down on cooler days, although it takes me 10 minutes or more to pull them off. They cut out light by about 50% and reduce temperatures from 40C to 30C (last year in the height of summer on a very sunny day).
