bush 6ft2.jpg This bush every spring throws up new growth up to 6ft tall but in the past I have always trimmed the new growth off as it gets covered in blackfly, its like a magnet. None elsewhere, just this plant. This year I have let it grow and even with spraying the blackfly are prolific. I'm pushing my luck with just one photo, I can add more if its not an easy spot.

    Possibly Guelder rose (viburnum opulus)

Thanks mazambo, I'm just waiting now for the blackfly to finish being eaten by the ants and the plant to hopefully burst into white flowers so we have a confirmation :)

The ants are not eating the black fly they are milking them of a sticky honey dew that they create.

The ants benefit from the honey dew and in turn they protect and move the black fly around.

Oh dear, I should have paid more attention in school I think, every days a school day! Thanks Pete for sharing that, they can both have some watered down washing up liquid then ;)

Looks like this should have flowered in June but i'm pretty certain that its Guelder rose as id'd by mazambo. Many thanks for that and please close this thread.

Ive been pruning it back every spring as it just grows and grows, that's why no flowers :wallbanging:
I will have to find it a new home where it can grow more than a metre without getting in the way.
                Thanks again mazambo.

So I left this plant to grow instead of pruning and its 6ft tall now with yellow to off white flowers. as members said last year its Guelder rose.

But the young stems are getting covered in black fly and look horrid.

Whats best to deal with this, Ive used washing up liquid solution before, anything better?
