my plot has plenty of potatoes, Casablanca first early, Charlotte and main crop Maris piper. We have some Casablanca left and have not started on the others. but my question is, what do I do now.
Can I leave them all in the ground and slowly work my way through eating the crop. Or do I dig up and store. Would need to know what the best way of doing that would be please.V

I think you can leave them and just work your way through leaving the main crop till last.
My main crop are marble sized, have you had rain?

Hi Pete, when it didn’t rain we watered the crop. We are about a quarter way through Casablanca and looking forward to Charlotte. Would like to leave them in the ground as the freshly dug up potato is the best. V

I leave mine in the ground and only dig up a root at a time as needed. My maincrop kept fresh till April.

@JWK Do you think I should covEr the crop with a black membrane to keep the weeds down or would that be bad for the potatoes.V

I think that a membrane might encourage slugs but I have never tried it.

@JWK maybe someone will see this thread who covers the crop to save weeding. But thinking about it it may harbour rot that goes down and gets the potatoes. V

I dont mind digging spuds until late September but after that its usually a quagmire around here so I tend to store in my garage, but probably not this year.

I've never had any luck digging up and storing in a shed or garage. They start to sprout and go soft after a few weeks. Only trouble with leaving them in the ground is not being able to dig them up when its frozen. It must be the type of soil here, light chalk doesn't get sodden.

            Overflowing cess pit ? ;)

Yes wait for other opinions. Whereabouts are you and what type of soil is it, those factors must make a difference.

@pete we are along the south coast Pete and the soil is quite sandy. I doubt if it will get wet, and certainly not laying on the ground.
If you dig up your spuds, do you put them in a hessian sack and keep them just frost free and in the dark.V

Well, as I say I wouldn't dig main crop until September at the earliest.
I dry them off, to some extent, if necessary, and put them in cardboard boxes, I dont like too many in one box in case some rot develops.
They then get stored in an outhouse or the garage, both unheated and dark.

For longer storage you need to wait till the tops die down and then after another 2 weeks the tubers harden up.

According to the instructions on the packet, my King Edwards should be ready to harvest in 17 weeks. They were planted 18th April (at least that was date I took the photo) which means they should be ready from 15th August.

                    G.

Thanks to you all with your good advice. Because I’m in a very warm spot, not seen a hard frost here, coupled with the fact that the soil is sandy free draining, I’m going to just dig when needed as that would be the very best - digging up new potatoes till spring YES!
