First bit, quite honestly I for one don't care how China or America or anyone else handled things. That sounds selfish and harsh but I wasn't there, nor was anyone I know personally. I'm only interested in what the British government did on behalf of the people in Britain. I'd like to see them exposed publicly for things like, not closing the borders when everyone else did, refusing to do anything at first because Boris wanted 'herd immunity', and how it took a whole bunch of very respected scientists going public with their concerns about government strategy before they did a U turn. I'd like to know how much truth is in the claims that the government was warned, several years ahead of the event, that we're not prepared for a serious disease epidemic. I don't care that much that individual politicians and their advisors broke the rules but others clearly do care about that given all the noise it generated. Mostly, and this is a big ask, but I'd like it if politicians thought they'd better not be so inept in future if they want to keep their careers in politics.

What was that advice? Maybe close airports/borders and lockdown straight away? That's about all I can think of. It didn't work in China where they were much stricter as in the long run it just prolongs the agony.

I must admit I thought the UK had got it wrong in being too slow to close borders and start lockdown, but it was an economic (i.e. political) decision to delay. They were weighing up the cost of people being out of work and unable to pay their mortgages against people dying. Not a nice decision either way. I'm not defending Boris as I think any other leader would have had to make that tough decision.

Public enquiries are total waste of time and money for us tax payers. It's just jobs for the boys/girls and will run for years with inconclusive results. I can't recall a single one that has ever come up with a clear cut set of recommendations.

Herd immunity is basically what we have now, via vaccination and natural immunity so that initial idea was correct.
Mutations of the virus appears also to have also helped it to become less dangerous.
The main part they got wrong IMO is the care home scandal.

Spanish flu was over much faster because of herd immunity, in those days there was no chance of a vaccine and at the start of covid we were in a very similar situation.

Yes the old folk in Care Homes were sacrificed and families treated inhumanely, not allowing visitors when they were dying.

            Not heard about that.
But just wondering if he is actually just wanting the Saudis to up production in order to bring the world price of oil down, rather than wanting oil for their own use in the US.

Herd immunity is what we have now after letting the old and the sick go.

I remember when bingo halls were allowed to reopen but gyms weren't. What's the logic in that? Call me an old cynic but gyms are mostly (not entirely) frequented by young fit people while bingo halls are mostly (again not entirely) frequented by older folks. By that reasoning, the gyms would likely be frequented by people with a lot of working life left, and a lot of years to pay tax, while many of the bingo hall guests will have finished paying into the system for most of a lifetime and will now be claiming their state pension which they rightly deserve.

Rumours are that Saudi Arabia are buying cheap Russian oil to bolster their 'output'. But don't quote me on that.

As usual it all comes down to money.

Yeah the rules were stupid which was why I did my best to not follow them.
Unfortunately it wasn't easy with everyone else policing you.
To me that was one of the worst effects of covid, the way people were coerced into informing on their neighbours and turning ordinary free thinking people into pariahs of society.

My new latest moan is a bit of a rant.

I have a regular hall booking for my household and a few friends to get together for martial arts training. I took ONE week off due to covid. I explained, and was assured my slot was there for me when I come back. The following week, clear of covid but still run down, we went to the hall, only to find it full of other people. They showed no signs of finishing up so we left, and I emailed the landlady to ask if I've lost my booking. Landlady apologised and promised it wouldn't happen again. Then this week, she emails me, someone else has the hall this week and next. But I can take a later slot, which is quite late for the young kids in our group, and then after next week I have my usual booking slot back. Yeah right, last week she gave her assurance that I had my usual booking this week.

Time to phone some alternative venues I think.

I suppose it's possible, it's a murky world with lots of oil tanker ships registered in tiny tax havens that are a law unto themselves, no-one knows where anything comes from.

That is very bad, we have had the same thing with our badminton sessions we have used this same hall for several years, then they suddenly try and cram other things onto adjacent courts, one time was netball so we had to contend with balls wacking across. It didn't work for us or the other group and just generates lots of bad feelings.

So we went to the hall last night, after the group that had nicked my booking. We agreed to move out session to after they'd left.

What we found when we got there has put me right off using the venue again. I know it's not the land lady's fault what people do in the hall and it's not normally like this but some things just put you right off.

Some friends joined as, as is usual, but if it had just been me and my household we'd have turned round and come straight back out but as everyone had turned up we kind of had to make the best of it. The first 20 minutes of our session were spent trying to clean enough of the floor so that people dare come in. There were empty pizza boxes on the benches, litter and food debris all over the floor, a spilled drink that had literally been left, no sign that anyone made any attempt to clean it up. And multiple bin bags full of rubbish just left in the hall. There's a fire door in the hall that leads right to the yard where the bins are, but they chose to leave the bags of rubbish in the hall. It was horrible.

In the name of fun while training, one of our games involves throwing a lightweight football at someone's face, they have to repel it with a named technique. For example, I might call out straight punch, then throw the ball. The person I throw it at has to strike it mid air. If they miss they lose a life and have to do ten pushups. Not last night though. We all agreed, nobody is touching the floor with their bare hands, so no pushups. The sheer filth of the place did generate some fun though but for the wrong reasons. Obviously when you strike the ball in mid air, it flies off in seemingly random directions depending on the accuracy of your strike. A few times there was a lot of excited screams as the ball whizzed off in the direction of the bin bags and I had to do my best to intercept it before it landed in the worst of the filth.

I've told the landlady all about it, and told her we're not going next week. After that I have my regular booking back, if I want it, but after being messed about and then finding such filth I'm now thinking of finding another venue.
