You’ve worked hard in the garden, it’s been a long day, the tools are back in the shed, you sit quietly relaxing, admiring the late light of day as it warms some areas but cools the deepened shadows; you are refreshed by — depending on your preferences — a glass of home-made lemonade or of fragrant Tobermory, you watch the fruits of your labour, plan the next day’s endeavours, and there it comes, sometimes hour after hour: thump-thump-thump-boom-boom-boom, loud indistinct music difficult to locate and impossible to define, or — depending on their preferences — the wailing of a creature extolling the number of dead heroes it has gloriously garnered on the battlefield.

There is nothing you can do about it. Do you love it, do you loathe it, do you care?

The first part of your post I don't quite understand. My garden tools don't seem to be able to find their way back to the shed and remain in their individual parts of the garden. :noidea:

Re noise:- Yes, I do care but we are lucky in where we are situated and chose the spot partially because of the lack of noise factor. I have rather sensitive hearing and do not like loud noises or any noise that is repetitive and out of place - and I decide whether it is out of place :heehee:. Having tinnitus doesn't help. I can accept the noise of the harvesting machines as they go backwards and forwards (actually, I've never seen one go backwards so I probably mean to and fro) but they don't take more than a couple of weeks to finish the work and a proportion of that time is distant enough for me.

A neighbour three doors away is a professional drummer and practices a couple of hours most days. He has a 'soundproof' shed in which he does his thumping. He was good enough to add more soundproofing when I said that it was disturbing me. Mrs Shiney said she couldn't hear it.

Fortunately there are no wailing creatures nearby and I quite enjoy the message that our Red Kite extolls when perched on top of one of our trees. He's a magnificent creature and regularly soars down to our lawn for the scraps and bones we put out for him.

Not a fan of other people's music, why do they think that just because they like it every one else must.

I have music which I like but I never impose it on other people.

I just put this in the Wakey, Wakey thread.

I guess you have the joys of living in a City.

We had a Heavy Metal Band living nearby but they had a soundproof studio.

We can hear neighbours' children playing their music, it might be nice music but all I hear is the bass so that can be annoying. We are in a noisy location anyway with a busy A road our garden backs onto. I have gradually got used to the traffic noise. We have a water feature on the patio and will switch that on to literally drown it out.
The most annoying thing is the meal time atco grand prix, I am mystified why they bring their lawn mowers out at 7pm just as we are sitting down for a peaceful lunch.
          Otherwise am I bothered? :mad::rolleyespink:

Ha! Very topical. Last weekend, 4,000 youngsters descended on a field near a lake 12 kms from us for a rave. The first we knew about it was the 'thump, thump, thump' on Friday evening through to Monday morning. Given that at least two local villages were holding their annual fêtes with loud music and fireworks on Sunday evening, it was pretty lively  No problem. If I was 20 years younger and liked that sort of music, I'd have been there, but I'm not and I don't
It must have been sheer hell for the people living close by, but in the grand scheme of things, one weekend isn't the end of the world, and it gave pleasure to so many people.
We're lucky to be living in a country and an area where we can have parties, skinny-dip and play music outside without disturbing anyone else, after so many years crammed in like sardines, in a town. I never cease to be grateful :)

You have to put up with some noise, it's part of life and unavoidable when there are lots of houses in close proximity to each other, so we have to be tolerant to a certain extent, and some people are more tolerant and understanding than others ...

The few neighbours I have here at the edge of the village are mostly well behaved and most are really nice people,

One day a neighbour apologised to me for the 'noise' coming from their garden due to children having a birthday party in the sunshine.
To me it was the happy sound of children playing but my neighbour next door the other side said "OH! Those children !"
but the said 'noise' only lasted an hour or two and it was just that day so it didn't bother me.

On the other hand a howling dog, cows in a near-by field, owls perched in the trees at the bottom of the garden (believe me they can be loud !), and screeching pheasants in the surrounding fields, often keep me awake in the early hours.
I complained about the dog and they got rid of it but there's nothing I can do about the cows owls and pheasants, so it's just as well I suffer badly from insomnia, although they can be rather annoying at 3 a.m. .

What I really can't understand is why people driving cars need their 'music' so loud you can feel the ground vibrating as they drive past.

This makes me feel old. 25 years ago I'd have known about this BEFORE it happened. Now I only find out about illegal raves when someone tells me they heard it, or when I read about it in the news.

I have a neighbour with a brace of deranged Yorkshire terriers, when the neighbour goes to work the yapping starts and doesn't stop until someone comes home. It's worse in term time. From time to time they are drowned out by the squabbling seagulls.

That's how I see it, and I also make a distinction between necessary and unnecessary noise. I don't generally mind animal noises because my brain just classes them as the sounds of nature, I'm not bothered by the noise of people socialising because I think it's healthy and sometimes very cathartic for them to occasionally be quite noisy, same with children as play is a very important part of their development in all sorts of ways. The only things I really cannot stand are frequent loud music, because you don't need to blast it out to enjoy it and dogs barking constantly, because it usually only takes a little disciplining to sort it out!

Our little cul-de-sac is so quiet. The only noise we hear is the sound of sirens from ambulances passing at the top of the village. We live 5 minutes from the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and the A7 passes the end of the village so we get every ambulance heading to or from the Borders or the City Bypass. There are a set of traffic lights where the village joins the A7 and they sound off every time they approach them.

My garden is generally very quiet.

I am only about 5 kliks from the big hospital in this area and once in awhile I hear sirens and as always, hope it turns out to be something very minor or a false alarm.

I have one neighbour who is a musician but I rarely hear them practicing as they generally keep their windows shut.

My street runs an L between a e-w and n-s streets and has about 30 houses on it so not a lot local traffic.

During the school year, I do hear the school children, a few blocks away, at recess and lunch, playing and it is fun to hear them shouting. Sometimes it sounds like a gaggle of geese.

And I'd much rather hear the street news from neighbours than twitch curtains! :heehee:

I can understand that you can’t understand it, I sort of understand it; what I can’t understand is that there is on this Forum no understanding of the word “understand”; I once asked an eminent member of this platform if they used the verb as a kind of metaphor but received no reply; to avoid a diplomatic incident, I won’t ask again, I am sure you understand; you will also understand that, by the same token, I won’t ask you, in case you should suspect some kind of inuendo; I know I can count on your understanding.
