I have a 2TB Samsung I have used for the past 8 years and it has been brilliant. Recently I bought a no-name SSD and it was cr@p. I had to return it. I would stick to recognised brands and go for as big a drive as you can afford. I have a 1.5 TB and a 2 TB and they are both about full (I store images in RAW format).

Have also used Samsung and Western Digital External HDDs, both still working well after many years.

Though very fast and great to speed up the PCs system drive, would avoid the newer External SSD for backups as they do not seem to last as long as real HDDs.

If your photos are that precious then get Two drives to backup onto, if your main PC drive fails you only have one backup to fall back on.
Store the second drive in a different house/building for safety.

You could use the Cloud as the Second backup source, though would personally never rely one its long term security /safety.
