    TAKE NOTE:thumb:

    Re: Notice on car

Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public

parking area. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the

rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home,

it was a receipt for petrol. Luckily my friend told me not to

stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the

car. Then we received this email yesterday:

    'WARNING FROM POLICE

BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE--NEW WAY TO

DO CAR JACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)'

.. You walk across the car parking, unlock your car and get inside. You

start the engine and shift into Reverse.

When you look into the rear-view mirror to back out of your

parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle

of the rear window. So, you shift into neutral, unlock your

doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or

whatever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach

the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out

of nowhere, jump into your car and take off. They practically

mow you down as they speed off in your car.

And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car.

So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your

money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are

    now compromised!

BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just

drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you

read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and

family, especially to women. A purse contains all kinds of

personal information and identification documents, and you

certainly do NOT want this to fall into the wrong hands.

    Please pass this on.

Sorry to burst your balloon, folks, but the email is a hoax. I had such an email myself some months ago and verified its hoax status on Snopes. hoax-slayer also had the comment ...

An English version of the message (shown above) states that such car-jackings are currently occurring in London and claims to originate from a UK based insurance company. However, there is no information about this apparent endorsement of the "warning" email on the insurance company's website. Furthermore, London's Metropolitan Police Service website has no warnings or reports about this method of car-jacking.

Definitely a hoax but as O2 says, there is no harm in being aware of possibilities :thumb:.

The thing we need to remember is that we shouldn't let all these hoax warnings (and there are loads of them out there) make us paranoid :)

I receive lots of these by email (particularly virus warnings) and treat them with healthy scepticism. They are easy to check up on and then I know whether to pass on any information I have received - minus the scare tactics :thmb:

Agree there Cookie! Mrs Pal had a note put under the rear wiper but thankfully didn't notice it in the darkness until she got home from Tesco's. She remembers two lads standing close by when she got into the car. BTW...Evesham,where she shops, is now know as 'Little Poland':skp:....Just a thought!

Kath,I think this is an email that comes from America as I was sent the same one last year.I don't think Inter actaully had it happen to him but had just put up the contents of the email so it actually reads that it was him that had the problem.I might be wrong and I am sure he will correct me if I have indeed read it wrongly, but that is how I read it.Not sure if it has actually happened to someone or not but nothing would surprise me in this day and age...

By the way, nice to see you again:).I did email you quiet some time back but never recieved an answer so wasn't too sure if you were unwell or had moved on to a different forum...

Hi Kandy - I've been quite unwell and have had other big life changing things happening of late. I am so sorry about the email - to be quite honest, I really don't know if it got to me as I have no record of it in my inbox ????

Anyway - it's good to be back for a while and I hope that you and Mr K are both doing well.
Sorry for the misunderstanding re this thread... I read it as Inter writing about a personal experience he had suffered. However this method sounds perfectly plausible and I have personally known a man who was car-jacked at knifepoint and was extremely shaken up by the experience.

A lot of these hoaxes may have some truth to them to begin with, like a lot of Urban Legends. However, the spam/hoax side of them is based on everyone immediately forwarding/sending them to all their email contacts and all those said contact doing the same, thereby slowing down email and ISP speeds. Very clever, if sneaky.
