Where to cut?

Hi all,
I moved house last June, and now have a fantastic well-established beautiful garden, which I want to look after to the best of my ability.

last year I had the most gorgeous rose bushes, which I now need to prune. A friend advised me to cut a chunk of height off them around October time, then to “cut them right down” around now.

However after reading other threads I’m nervous about doing that. I can’t decide where to cut. I’m not seeing any new nodes/knots/buds so not sure where to prune them down to. I’ve attached a picture of the plant in question from in front and behind if that helps.

All guidance gladly received.

 

Hi Laura, it looks like the label is still attached to the base so if it's still readable it should tell you it's name and maybe what kind of rose it is, i.e. bush, climbing, David Austin English rose etc.
That would help greatly in giving any advice to you.

 

Do you know the name or type of rose? Hybrid tea roses are pruned quite hard. Shrub roses are usually pruned by shortening by about a third, cutting out any dead and spindly stems and thinning out the centre a bit to stop them getting congested.

Probably a bit early for nodes to appear. Wait till March or April depending on the area you live in.

@wiseowl It was after reading your pruning post that I didn’t want to cut willy nilly, after you mention “outward facing nodes”. But its good to know the lovely rose will probably survive whatever damage I may inadvertently cause

This may be of some help

 

David Austin's website, and other websites including the RHS, say it is a climbing rose that will grow up to 4 1/2 metres tall. In that case it will need support and shouldn't be pruned any shorter this year.
