Green woodpecker in the orchard after the ants. Lovely to watch. Have a video but too large to attach.

And then a hornet again. The same one or another? Must have come through from one of the bedroom windows and then flew down into the sitting room and onto the window panes just like before. Yes we caught it and put it outside. Why do they come in?

Male Greenfinch and Chaffinch are visiting daily now but no sign of females, maybe on eggs.

Mr and Mrs Spot, one of our pairs of blackbirds, have also now started taking their young around their garden. Mr Spot was feeding two of them (don't know whether there are more) under our bird feeder. He was flying up to get seeds from one of the hanging feeders and then feeding them to the young. The young appear to be bigger than him!

@shiney how did that robin get on with his nest in the cardboard box in your car port? Any babies?

Very similar to our Goldcrests and Firecrests, which are in the kinglet family.

Baby dunnock in the garden today! In the first pic it's sunbathing - leaning out to catch the rays on its side. I'd noticed the adult birds were very busy lately and thought they must have a nest somewhere, but it's the first time I've seen a dunnock fledgling in my garden. I've seen them a few times when out walking in the countryside.

Found myself completely surrounded by a swarm of St Mark's flies this morning during my walk.
Also noticed the Egyptian geese/ducks which I pictured earlier now have 5 little uns.

Managed to catch the dunnock being fed today. I bet the parent birds have nighmares this time of year. Every time they shut their eyes they see the gaping bills in front of them ...

This female blackbird whizzed right past me at eye level heading for the pond. I assumed she was just going for a drink but decided to follow and get a photo. She was rooting around in the tops of the plant pots for sludge - I had to google to find out why, apparently they use it to line their nests.
She was back again within minutes for another load.

I also caught a youngster taking a bath.

I've just been watching an adult robin begging food from another. Must be courtship behaviour. The feeding robin looks quite a lot bigger so presume that's the male. He was being kept extremely busy!
