Today is a Bank Holiday. Since the banks have closed all the branches within a thirty mile radius to me, and we can only bank online now, how do they now mark a Bank Holiday? Do all the computer button pressers put on mittens and refuse to press another button for 24 hours?

Why should I wear mittens to use this forum on a Bank Holiday do you?

I was meaning the bank workers who no longer have a bank to open or close on any day, holiday or otherwise.

My typing is always bad, mittens or not.

Many of the branch workers will have moved to on to work in supermarkets and call centres, as the banks no longer need them. The only people who will be pushing computer buttons today will be the online banking users like yourself and it is up to you whether you wear mittens while online banking on Bank Holidays or any other day of the year.
What is the obsession with wearing mittens anyway?

These pesky computer programmers will be at it to today changing the formats after taking a year to get used to the old one.

The computers will keep working. There'll be minimal staff working in case something goes wrong with the computers, and people on call in case the people who're working can't fix it (my brother used to work in the computer systems part of a bank and was often on call on bank holidays - he would turn up for his Christmas lunch with his work laptop in case he had to log on and sort something out, and no alcohol in case he had to go in).

Bank call centres will probably be staffed (I think probably some of them work from home these days) but maybe not as many people as normal. I checked the website of my bank (First Direct, so no branches) and there's nothing specific about bank holidays on the Contact Us page.

I found an old £20 note at home in a book I prob put it there for safe keeping and forgot about it, now we have the new shiny slippery plastic ones, can I take it to a bank and swap it for a new one or pay it in? That’s if I can find a bank ? Obviously today is a bank holiday so if I could find a bricks and mortar bank it’ll be closed then I’m at work the rest of the week and the banks are closed when I go to work and when I leave! Hmmm :wallbanging:

I think if you have a bank account you can still pay them into that by visiting a post office or the relevant bank and providing photo ID. I think.

@Millie16 The paper notes are still legal tender ( much better than the pesky shiney jobs IMO ). It's a shame you don't have much spare time otherwise you could trot round a few shops and see if they will still accept them or accuse you of being a secret counterfeiter

Bof bof! You British just don't know how to organise proper holidays  For a start, if you plan them by date rather than always having them on a Monday, you open up a whole new world of skiving ( or maximising your holiday allowance, depending on your point of view). For every holiday that falls on any day but Wednesday, you construct a 'bridge ' between weekend and official holiday, giving yourself a 4 day holiday for the price of one day out of your official quota. May is a classic!
IIRC last year there were 5 'bank holidays' in May alone. The classic one being the 'Day of Work', 1st May, when even the binmen down tools!!
Absolutely nothing to do with banks here  Religion, wars, politics....any excuse will do :roflol:

I made a transaction with my debit card on Thursday and I see its still "pending" so yes the banks are on holiday, it just that you dont notice it so much these days.

And as someone said they only ever worked short hours and at the same time as everyone else so was never really much use to anyone who worked normal hours anyway.

For some odd reason, solicitors used to give their staff an extra day's holiday following a Bank Holiday. It was much appreciated when I had children and when I changed jobs I used that as leverage to gain an extra 4 days holiday!

          Happy days.

With most banks you can pay the old notes in through the post office. :blue thumb:

Macmillan has been in financial difficulties recently and has had to “let go” 26% of its staff, among other things. It is now recruiting what my Scottish mother used to call “heid yins”, in an attempt to improve its prospects.

Fancy one of these jobs? If you do, could you maybe tell me what exactly you will be doing all day?
