That looks likely @wiseowl . Lovely birds. We often had them visiting at the last house, although I saw some round here during Covid lockdowns. We're approx. half an hour from the coast, but there must have been slim pickings for them with no visitors to the seaside, so were heading further inland. We wouldn't normally have them in this area

We have lots of birds visiting our plot but heard rather than seen well enough to be identified so Merlin to the rescue. We've had nightingales singing by day and now have long-eared owl chicks calling after dark.

i heard nightingales at night when we first moved here 8 years ago but then they went silent so a welcome return. It's the first year hearing the long-eared owls and I think that's because the farmers behind us have retired to a new house in the nearby village and our paddock is now only visited a couple of times a year for hay so the trees in the hedgerow must feel safer and there will be abandoned magpie nests for them to adopt.

This year we also have successful magpie nests in the two ash trees by the pond. One pair comes with 3 demanding babies clamouring for food and, now they're a bit bigger, the youngsters try and bath in the water bowl and splash it everywhere so I've put out a second one with a big stone in it to provide drinking water and deter bathing. There are other water bowls and containers about the plot for insects and birds.

We also have at least 2 woodpecker families entertaining us now that they're bringing their bairns to the feeders.

Lots of little brown jobs heard - assorted buntings and warblers, dunnock and wren - but no flycatchers so far. We have swallows and house martins nesting - bit messy in the storage sheds but we can clean up after they've gone.

No green woodpecker this year so far and no barn owl heard either. The cuckoos have gone silent this last week but that may be heat related or they've left early.

Lots of insects too with an assortment of bees and beetles but I tend not to garden with my camera so no photos.

Good afternoon @fairygirl yes we used to see lots of them on our River Medway but alas now that they have built 100's of new houses on both banks of the river they are a rare sight:smile:

I wonder what measures have been put in place for those houses re flood prevention...

We have a lot of resident birds and we get on well with them.

One of our male pheasants who is quite happy wandering round the garden even when we have visitors - or he's too stupid to be afraid!

Our resident red kite sits a lot in the top of one of our tall trees and swoops down for tidbits when we whistle for him. He's always too fast for my camera. Two of his children now visit regularly.

We have a few woodpeckers that nest in our trees. Used to be four regular families but only seen two in the last two years.

This buzzard (?) has only turned up in the last two days and sits on the top of another tall conifer.

We have had a kite over the garden now for some weeks. At first we think it is a buzzard but then the tail...it is a kite.
Also we have had again for some weeks little egrets flying over. Very unusual but they keep coming.

Lovely pix of the long tailed tits @Escarpment . We had a little flurry of them recently, but I couldn't get a decent pic at all. One of my favourite birds.
Lovely photos @strongylodon . It's always great to see the youngsters coming in. I happened to look out the front window yesterday just at the moment a young robin hopped along the fence.
This wee chap has been in a few times - sometimes with a pal. There's plenty of them around but they don't always come into the garden
