What I find worthy of attention is the cynical psychology used by advertisers targetting the various demographics. I bet you've noticed this too.

Example, afternoon/early evening viewers watching, say, elderly episodes of 'Midsomer' or 'Father Brown' are probably older, at home, retired, and therefore in need of .....a Funeral Plan.....Meal ( traditional meat and three veg, sponge and custard ) Deliveries..... A Mobility Scooter.....A Stairlift.....A High-Rise chair, etc. And, of course, being nice, generous, kindly old dears with disposable income and tender hearts, throw loads of needy animal charity appeals at them and wait for the cheques to roll in.

Different demographic for a younger audience watching currently popular shows or sports, therefore a different target - perfumes, aftershaves, booze, make-up, jewellery, fast-food deliveries, cars, and go steady on the funeral plans, unless the Bank of Mum and Dad is about to permanently close it's doors, in which case, you'd better get them to sign up pronto and secure their 'inheritance'.

Still, advertising space costs money, so advertisers aren't going to throw it away. Honestly, you can predict the programmes that are showing just by watching one set of adverts.

I think I need to get out more

You can also predict the programmes from the adverts.

@pete, re football, I find is astonishing the commentators believe there is so much to say. Surely "kick the ball and score goals" covers it.

The adverts have to be marginally more interesting than the pundits with big yellow lollipops. What's that all about, then?

I watch a lot of programmes on Discovery+ now. It's interesting to see the actual run time of programmes. Most 30 minute (schedule time) programmes run 22 minutes and 1 hour for 44 minutes!

@pete I don't mind the prattling on before and after the match, or at half time, as I only watch the actual match. The problem is that the prattling on continues throughout the matches now. On TNT Sport they always have a female 'commentator' who only ever seems to repeat what the male one has just said, and he prattles on too.

BBC 4 TV can have some interesting programmes but not often enough. The BBC as a whole should be classified in much the same way as commercial channels - they certainly spend plenty of time advertising their wares. BBC radio's World service can also be relevant/interesting but it's becoming noticeable how that is deteriorating in content too.

I can't get my head around the advert for deodorant that lasts for 72 hours. I'd rather not be near someone who relies on that!

There's an advert for an all body deodorant for all your stinky bits. You need never wash again.

So that's me off your next garden open day list.

Saturday night was always bath night, and often you got in after someone else,

Then we wonder where all the water shortage and pollution comes from.:roflol:
