Sides going in and out is normal in this house. It means deep, deep sleep. :)

@shiney maybe the Calico cat is just panting as it is so hot? We had a tortie and she never weighed more than 4kg. In summer her fur thinned out quite a bit compared to the winter coat and she did look quite slinky. When she got to about 18 we noticed for the first time we could feel her backbone was bumpy as she had lost weight. That's when she went downhill. Otherwise she could look very lean, but was healthy.

I thought it might be panting but she has her mouth closed most of the time. :noidea:

I’ve never seen a cat pant in the same way that a dog does.

I must admit I only saw our cat pant once. It was the day after she had been neutered and she was sat in the sun by a warm brick wall. She had her mouth open panting. I had to shield her from the sun and it stopped.

Maybe a cat's sides will go in and out if they are dreaming, along with whisker movement and paw twitching. Just a thought.

Male cats disappearing at night sounds like a female in heat near by. Whether he is neutered or not, that could be a possibility for the frenzy to get out. Where there is one stray, there might be more hiding?

Karin, German lady who moved in down the lane 18 months ago has two cats, both male, and I have never seen them once. She said they go out the opposite direction to her old house.

Yesterday was back to normal. He visited in the morning, came when called when we were sitting out before dinner, cane in for dinner and slept in our bedroom. Only hitch, he had a shouting/scratching fit about 5am then calmed down and went out at 8am.

We keep our bedroom window all night and the lounge window with just screens so he can sit/lay all night in the air. Bedroom faces East, Lounge West.

                  Bedroom ...

Lounge view (in the rain years ago, don't have one dry)...

Your cat will no doubt be angry about the wild life outside at that time in the morning. Set up some motion cameras and see who your visitors are. They cost £30 upwards.

My Poppy's routine has also changed during the hot spell. She was coming in 4 times a day for food but recently she has barely eaten any food before disappearing for the day. She stopped coming up on my bed each morning and evening etc. but seems to be reverting back to her old routine now. I was more concerned because I have never seen her drink from her indoor water bowl although I know she drinks from the pond.
She has taken to sleeping in a shady corner of the conservatory despite the temp. being in the 30's. I imagined her brains boiling inside her skull! I would assume the rapid breathing is a natural reaction to the high temp.
Poppy is also tiny, her weight has never been more than 4 kg. Everyone who meets her comments on how small she is and think she is still a kitten, genes probably, or just the runt of the litter. Nearly all of the cats around here would make at least 2 of her.

No problems. They were brought up here. These are gardens and the only wildlife is birds and the odd rabbit and neither cat bothers with them. Neither are hunters.

Kerfuffle at the cat flap last night as the visitor anticipated his/her late evening feed by coming in ans eating what my pair had left. Minstrel not impressed. It gets a whole tin plus leftovers but still sneaks back in the night to raid my cats' food bowls.

I leave a bowl of fresh water down and Cosmos sometimes drinks from it. He also used to drink from the dogs' bowl and also drinks from the bucket under the hot water tank overflow pipe and the birds' water bowl. Minstrel likes her 12% cream and i've hardly ever seen her drink water so her biscuits rations are being reduced. Kidney failure is a real problem in aging cats and she's 9 this month.

How long has your visitor been visiting? Our visitor The Squeak used to come daily and Jim used to give him some biscuits till he realised he was clean, healthy and well fed so he must have a home. Now the visits are only twice a week so no treats. I think he likes visiting for the company and nice places to laze around. The "rooms" in my garden were designed for people and cats.

I wish cats were allowed to roam around here. It is against the town's bylaws for cats to be allowed to roam and since I am quite sensitive to them, I can't be around them long but do like to be able to administer the occasional caress because I really like them. It was nice before that stupid bylaw. I grew catnip in on garden to welcome them. And now the town is worried because of a rodent problem. How stupid can these people get! :rolleyespink:

It's hard to say @Victoria . We lost our two dogs to old age and cancer just over a year ago and, while they were alive, very rarely had even farm felines visiting our plot. OH started seeing a beige and brown cat lurking in early spring but never near the house. I spotted a tabby and white farm cat lurking.

The beige cat has become bolder and has been sneaking in to feed at night for almost 3 months. When I finally got a good look I could see it was abonny cat but skinny and scruffy and unloved so I started putting out a bowl of food every night before bed.

It now waits for its dinner at the back of the house and doesn't run when I appear but sits a couple of metres away and listens while I talk to it and put down the food. It's looking sleeker and cleaner now so presumably has more time to sleep and groom but still needs some TLC. Hoping one day to get it to the vet to see if it has a chip or can be properly adopted.
