I saw something in the garden the day and thought it was a small piece of brown wood I went to pick it up and it flew away.
I’ve managed to get a quick photo of it. It’s about an inch across from wing tip to wing tip. It’s the black with some white markings. It’s in middle of pic. TIA

IMG_0409.jpeg Anyone have any idea what it is please? TIA.

I've seen that in books etc @Songbird , but not in real life. Can't remember what it is though - sorry. I'm sure someone will help though.

Is your feeder near that fence @Friendly? If so, it makes it very easy for rats to get access. You may have to consider moving it, but also removing it for now so that it hopefully goes elsewhere - with it's pals too. Really annoying, and you may also have to investigate a bit to see where they're initially getting access - holes going under fences for example. They can get through such small holes though, which is why it's so hard to deter them once they find a good source of dinner. :frown:

Is it a Plume Moth @Songbird? They look like biplanes.

I get them in the house. If you get near them they start vibrating.

Yes it is near the fence but the rat would climb up the tree anyway. He has made tunnels under the fence too. I am loath to take the food away as the birds have come to depend on it but I may have to.

Can anybody identify this butterfly/moth please. It's not illustrated in any of my books.
Found on a clematis leaf near the bathroom window.

                  Thanks

Yes, Jersey Tiger. I had one in the garden this morning, but it didn't hang around long enough for me to get the camera. They are doing very well this year.

We don't get those plume moths here, unfortunately. I'd like to see one in real life. It seems the very few areas up here that get them are coastal too.

I didn't know there was a tree nearby @Friendly , as it isn't visible in your pic, but I assume that's what the feeder is hanging on? I think it's worth removing the food source for a while, and also addressing the tunnels. There are 'home use' bait boxes available which can be placed appropriately. It's a better time of year to take the food away too, rather than later in the year when birds need it even more. Not easy.
I had one which seemed to be nesting under my shed. A house across from me had done some removal work in their garden and that's possibly where it had come from, or maybe the NT garden/woodland just across the road from there. I was able to get rid of it using one of those boxes, as I could see the access hole, and have had no problem since then. Touch wood!
We're near farmland too, so there's always the risk of getting some, but you certainly don't want them multiplying - which they will, very easily.

You can get Ghost Plume Moths too. They are very beautiful (not my picture! It's from Wikimedia Commons).
