it has taken a long time for the first Comma to appear in the garden and it landed near the resting, returning Painted Lady.

After discussing the absence of tortoiseshells, their ears [antennae?] must have been burning yesterday, as one appeared in the garden and was flitting around for ages. I didn't manage a decent pic unfortunately, but hopefully there'll be more to come once the weather clears up again.

Thanks for that info @SherwoodArrow - I've got that bookmarked now, so I'll try and get a little bit of time on a good day to count - if there's anything much to count of course!

                      Indeed - wonderful pix @strongylodon :)

Have you ever seen a dark bordered beauty moth ? They were talking about it on the Radio Scotland prog this morning [Out of Doors] which covers all sorts of items. They're only present in 3 sites in the UK - 2 in the Cairngorms and the other's in Yorkshire. They rely on Aspen for the caterpillars, so the item was about those as well, as it's also a difficult issue because the aspen need to be young saplings, and grazing by deer etc causes problems with that. Beautiful things.

I may well have seen one when I've been up walking in the 'Gorms, but I wouldn't have realised!

I understand that @strongylodon ! It would be the same for me going to your area
I just wondered if you'd ever travelled around and maybe seen one. It's certainly very beautiful. The whole thing of the relationship with Aspens was very interesting, and they're trying to increase those, although it's not easy.
Next time I'm up that way I'll be keeping an eye out, but no doubt they'll see me coming and hide...:heehee:
