Any thoughts on what did this? Woodpecker? There can’t be any insects in the newish painted wood, so was it to get at eggs or baby birds?

A bit of a long story
Where I once worked there was old brickwalls to the workshop, in places there were holes where pipes used to go through, we stopped the draughts by putting plywood on the inside, this left holes in the outside for sparrows to nest.

One day the nests were attacked by crows and I remember beaks coming right through the plywood.

They will go after the baby birds too, that's why there's a ring of metal around the entrance hole, to stop them enlarging it.

Warning - not for the faint hearted:

Squirrels [the horrible grey ones not the reds] will also gnaw wood to get at eggs/chicks, but that looks different damage- ie beak, so it's likely to be something like woodpeckers, as others have said.
The crow family can also be persistent with that type of behaviour too, as @pete has described, although jackdaws seem less abusive. We don't tend to get problems with nest boxes, but the fighting with magpies over nest sites is a PITA, and has been really bad this year. Magpies have nested in our conifer this year [:frown:] which put the blue tits off using the nest box in there. Probably just as well.
