Where to start

@fairygirl Lawns, for me, are a monoculture of grass only with regular shaving, weed and feed treatments and watering to keep them clean and neat plus regular scarifying and aerating.

Grass can be grown a bit longer and have "weeds" so don't get selective weedkiller treatment and are all the better for a bit of moss in shady areas. Great for kids and pets to run around on and just as good at setting off borders and, with that bit more diversity, more beneficial to a range of insects and birds as well as soil organisms.

Allowing some of the grass to grow longer and letting wildflowers grow - adding them if necessary - creates a much richer environment for children as well as wildlife.

 

I don't scarify, aerate or water grass here @Obelix-VendéeThe very rare feed or weed and feed is exactly that - very rare. It takes ten minutes to cut it about once a week [and we often have to cut it when it's wet, especially in late spring when it's growing well] so it's far less trouble than maintaining borders with perennials, or containers of annuals.
While the OP's location is a historically drier part of Scotland than here [and it's why Perthshire is the main crop growing centre ] it's still not as dry as many areas of the UK, and basic grass is generally pretty easy to keep looking decent as long as it isn't being scalped. The farmers over there are having a difficult time just now, but, despite the very noticeable climate changes, that's still not a common problem. It's always about location and conditions as to how it's cared for.

It's by far the best surface for children to play on, and they like having daisies etc in it - mine loved all that when they were little, and the grass was just left to do it's own thing, in both front and back gardens. Once they were bigger, I was able to have it looking better. Hopefully @PapaAldo1872 will be able to give us more info regarding how he wants to use the space. That's what matters, as it's his garden.
