Gosh @Michael Hewett , bet that was a shock! We have bats here as they roost in the woodland behind the bungalow and we see them most evenings. Lovely!

Miss Jiff keap saying that something flew past she at night, we had 1 bat in the house which took us a few days to catch, we cault it and rang the bat lady who gave us some info, that being that it was inside it need water/liquid so we done has the lady said and let it go, which was in the day time but the lady said it would be ok as they find somewhere to hang out the day and become active again as night falls DSCF8289 (2022_04_09 12_55_51 UTC).JPG

Fall is definitely on its way, as can be seen by the golden glow of autumn in this image of a female Northern Cardinal.

Long tailed tits are one of my favourite birds @strongylodon. You were quick to get those pix! They're so speedy. Gorgeous wee things. Funnily enough, I listen back on BBC sounds to one of my favourite DJs, whose show is on at midnight until 3am on R2. They do an item every so often about birds, and have someone on doing a bit about the what they look like, where you'd see them, and their nest sites, their call etc. The featured bird the other night was long tailed tits, and she said they're often called teaspoons, because of the long tail and the little round body. I'd not heard that before, but it's a great description. :)

Beautiful pic @hydrogardener. Your photos are always stunning - you must have a lot of patience!

Today, I came across a female Solitary Sandpiper fishing with her chicks. It seems late in the season for them to be around, as they have a long migration ahead. That said, it is still very warm with little rain, temperature is in the lower and mid 80s.

They are migratory, travelling from their boreal forest breeding grounds in Alaska and Canada to wintering areas in Central and South America and the Caribbean. Their migration is noteworthy because, unlike most other sandpipers that migrate in flocks, Solitary Sandpipers are typically encountered alone during their lengthy nocturnal journeys.

This is one of the Solitary Sandpiper's chicks, an exact copy, only 1/3 her size. It is astounding to think that some night soon this little bird will take off for South America, on its own, never having been there before. We don't really understand nature as well as we think we do. I doubt we will ever know how they do the things they do.

Had a Jay in the garden yesterday, first one I've seen for ages. It will be a good year for them with all the acorns.

@hydrogardener there have been a few Sandpipers blown over here this last week and we will probably get even more with the present gales. Buff Breasted and a Baird's are here.
                          Solitary could turn up too.

There has been a huge influx of Glossy Ibis around the country over 600!
This is still an uncommon bird nationally. 90 were seen flying over the river Exe last week and now 5 have arrived on the flooded fields in Wareham but distant.

This is a white-breasted nuthatch, they are so fast and jittery it is like skeet shooting trying to photograph them.
