Note pheasants are stupid and to catch one all you need is some thread, a raisin and a tent peg.

That's a great outcome @Neil Clements, I'm glad that the pushy couple lost out to a respectful gardener! Looking forward to hearing how your garden develops and welcome to the forum!

It's a little harsh to judge them by human standards. They see food in a shallow hole and don't recognise the workings of a noose. We should use that power wisely.

Add a treadle trigger, a counterweight and a more complex route for the rope in a suitable environment and I could catch you. You could catch me just the same. That doesn't make us stupid, it just means we wouldn't see it coming because it's not a situation we'd expect to find ourselves in.

I'm more than a little flummoxed that you would think myself or others would spend time constructing a Rube Goldberg type contraption to trap and possibly harm you.
There's nowt so queer as folk eh!

I guess I had a momentary giggle about the traps me and my friends used to set for each other around our dens when we were kids. Nothing sinister or harmful at all, more like a long standing game of tag that raised our awareness of our surroundings!

Your comment made me think about how the pheasant probably wouldn't enjoy that game!

Never really got the concept of friends.

I can't think of anything better than sharing an experience with a small group of friends in a remote area. Whether it's the highlands of Scotland or the vast forests of Canada, or maybe just knocking weeds off of the vegetable garden with a hoe on a warm summer day. I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much if I was alone. My love of gardening came from a lifelong urge to spend as much time as I possibly can outdoors, but in doing so I've met some truly amazing people who share my appreciation of nature.

There's nothing wrong with alone time, I quite enjoy that too, but I'd be lost without people around me. All the most important things in my life have been shared with me by others - how to track, trap, grow or forage, make fire and shelter, cook. Put me in a room full of people and it feels really awkward but that's because most people wouldn't know where to start when it comes to old skills. Tesco and Amazon provide everything they need and I can't relate to that.
