Note pheasants are stupid and to catch one all you need is some thread, a raisin and a tent peg.

It's a little harsh to judge them by human standards. They see food in a shallow hole and don't recognise the workings of a noose. We should use that power wisely.

Add a treadle trigger, a counterweight and a more complex route for the rope in a suitable environment and I could catch you. You could catch me just the same. That doesn't make us stupid, it just means we wouldn't see it coming because it's not a situation we'd expect to find ourselves in.
