Me I was with Beeb Net for a couple of years til they closed down. Reliable but slow - advantage easy connection and talk to tech support and customer services. Cost more than most of the main stream but was worth it.

When Beeb Net closed - did some research and moved to Zen. Easy tranfer, excellent customer service and technical support (0800 numbers too) and its faster. So well pleased. Same prices as beeb net - so more expensive than most - but you get what you pay for. Monthly contract to, so if I want out - no hassle. As I don't do bundles - suits me fine.

i was with tiscali £14-99 a month, but went through hell when i moved house.
Then as i could not get good tv reception i had to have sky, £17 a month, broadband, free router, free calls after 6 pm and weekends, and basic sky which is loads of channels ,so its only costing me £2 extra
re MAC code they cannot legally deny you just insist on it there and then and they have to give it you

i use virgin, but would like to move to sky. virgin are ok but they cap your speeds after so long, plus customer srvce is terrible. i have friends who moved to sky and they get full speed, due to being close to server or upgraded systems for they're area., once they upgrade my area, i will be moving to them.
when mr branson took over it went down hill.

I've 10mg Broadband (sometimes) basic cable TV, with their latest V + box (record two channels watch one and lots of other gismos) "Talk unlimited" (that's the wife), and internet security.

My average bill is around £80 a month, mainly because my wife uses 0800 numbers a lot (average £20 per month) when she does her internet shopping.

At least you can phone them up and moan at them free, they're quite good on service too.

we bare with pipex but will probably change. trouble is the old BT line can't cope with a descent speed, so probably need to change to a fibre optic.
Pipex keep trying to up the speed even though they promised to cap it 'cos the line can't cope....so every few months they up it and we lose connection until we phone them and tell them to lower it again!

talktalk sucks!!! i wish i never swapped from bt. the speed is slower (can only get 1mb on my line anyway), the wireless is next to useless, i can no longer do surveys on my lappy :( ive tried complaining, but when you phone you get a foreigner who doesnt even know the language, let alone their way around a pc.

I was with Tiscali which was taken over by Talktalk, no problems with them. They phoned up recently to get me to sign up for a new deal (and an 18 month contract). I said "No, I will not sign up for 18 months, I wish to remain free to move if I want to".

I get the impression that most people who have problems, know very little about computers or communication systems. Most times when the Internet is slow it's because of congestion of the lines and equipment. I save myself a lot of aggravation by not using Windows. Ubuntu/Linux is so much better, it just works. I learnt a lot in my 12 years working for BT.

If you mean v6.04 then that is very out of date, better download the current ISO file (v10.04), burn the ISO to CD, then boot the "live" CD, try it out. If you like it then you can install from there. One thing about UBUNTU is that it's free, so there's no problem with having the latest version. It is good and is not that complicated (certainly no more than Windows, most software that is available, again for free, works the same as it does under Windows). If your computer will run Vista then it will have no problems running Ubuntu v10.04. The version number is Year.Month, they are issued every six months in April and October.

To read about the system, download the Full Circle Magazine which is also free and all issues are available at http://fullcirclemagazine.org/
