I'm thinking of planting a rose in my tiny front garden but wondered if there is a minimum distance it should be from the wall, to prevent the roots causing any trouble to the foundations (or for any other reasons). I'm thinking it would be around 30 - 50cm (measured to the main trunk of the rose), and I would want a type that doesn't grow too big, maybe about 3 feet or so - is that too close?

    Thanks in advance!

Claire, if you`ve only a small space, I would suggest getting a patio rose. They only grow about 2ft.:thumb:

Hi Claire, never had any problems with roses close to the wall, if you have the "wall space" why not fix some trellis to the wall and train a climber or rambler up it, takes up very little ground space so you still have room for other plants.

Good point Mike, people often train climbing roses up house walls I think so presumably the roots are similar and not a problem :)
Unfortunately not an option for me I think as the wall is taken up already with clematis, the door and the window! - the bed is currently a mish-mash of small perennials and I want to give it some structure so thinking of keeping a few of the perennials and putting in a rose (patio rose might be ideal, good suggestion, thanks for that too Dai!) and a couple of lavenders, and dividing some unruly geraniums that are in the other bed and putting some of those too... Actually I could do with some advice in general! So I will take a picture and start a new thread I think - thanks for the initial reassurance :)
