Old dogs

Greyhounds have a tough life when they are racing and an even tougher one when they retire. Their racing life is short and then they are of no use to the racing fraternity. What happens to them then? Fortunately, some are rescued and given good homes. They make wonderful, affectionate pets and don't need too much exercise. Often their wind is gone and their limbs strained so they are content to amble gently with their new owners.

How right you are Hornbeam. Greyhounds do make lovely pets,a friend of mine has been rescuing them for years and has had some super dogs.As you say they require very little exercise,only a gentle stroll on the lead is enough for most retired Greyhounds. They make very good family pets and are very devoted to their families,only negative side to them is that they are sighthounds and therefor not very suitable to live with cats and other small furries,I have known a few who hace successfully lived with cats.

 

Yes, i have a friend who is on her 3rd rescue greyhound and all of them have been gorgeous! The latest one, Smokey, is a real card and full of mischief but when it comes to walkies its 'no thanks, Dad, much to comfy here'!
Its such a shame so many of them are discarded (or worse)when of no more use to the racing fraternity :(

 

My daft dog is getting on a bit now. She's 9 or 10, but still full of fun.

Maybe when we move to a bigger place, we'll be able to adopt a big dog like one of those sweeties. Meanwhile we cuddle our mini dog. She's 8yrs 9mths but you couldn't tell as she's still very much a hyper 'puppy'.

 

Lovely, Luckyboo. Old dogs become so knowing and wise. Mine understands just about everything you say and we have to spell out certain words. Like LEAD, OUT and WALK

 

Ours has a wide understanding of vocab as well. We need to spell or abbreviate as well e.g. walkies became-walk-w's-then the ears started perking up at the mere syllable, now she knows pedestrian. And she communicates with particular sighs, barks, whines, shakes of the ears, and all sorts of actions that tells us what she wants. Similar to the baby sign language thing. So intelligent they are.
