    Hi All

I am experimenting with different non-toxic slug repellants and wondered if copper tape has any downsides apart from the cost?

In addition I am trying out the "Mr Brown's Mk1 Slug Excluder" technique from http://gardenspace.newarchaeology.com/slugs.php and wanted to see if anyone uses any effective variations on these or eggshells etc.

    Best Regards
    Seedybee

i'm looking at copper plant tags at the moment, and my guess is that there can't really be any issues with copper otherwise they wouldn't be in use.

    Good luck!

    Hi folks
regulars will know my coffee remedy - cheap coffee granules - 4 tbspns to a handheld sprayer, top with water. Spray susceptible plants thouroughly, daily for a week, then after damp weather. Nematodes good too, + am also experimenting with copper matting this year - looks ugly, but so far so good - but only in the veg garden, no good where plants are cheek by jowl, as slimy critters just crawl from plant to plant. try here also

    Hi Lynne

Nice link you posted there, the instructions sound good to me :D

    Setting up
Open a can of beer and drink up to 90% of the contents (beer not included) then:-

read a tip in a garden mag but it only applies if you have hostas in pots

stand the pot on legs and in a saucer of water (slugs can't swim)

I've taken to using beer traps:

take one can of tescos cheap beer (90p for 4 cans :D they aren't having the good stuff!) and pour into cheap cat food bowl (which has nice loping sides for them to get into the bowl) and leave around susceptible plants (apparantly the work for up to 1m around the bowl) and leave for slugs to find

they really are attracted to it and we've found loads of pissed and dead slugs [IMG]

Beer traps are great. I have been using this for years. They cant resist. The only down side I can think of is...does this method invite slugs from far and wide into your garden??

Yeah, I had the same thought... you can almost picture it can't you: "Hey, you next door, there's free beer here! Tell them in Number 4!" Every garden in the terrace is clear of slugs because the chilled little dudes are getting pi$$ed in my garden...

Have you read the book '50 ways to kill a slug'? Very entertaining for those looking for new and novel ways of dispatching the critters. I saw it in the gift shop at the Alnwick Garden and just had to buy it for my mum who is an avid slug killer...
