Judging by the bark, a sweet chestnut - according to my tutor..... but I seem to remember, Pete had different ideas on that subject, and is very likely right, as he usually is!

This is a quote about the tree, about what's distinctive about it.....

"Key distinguishing feature: corkscrew appearance to trunk Large serrated leaves Prickly ball - shaped green seed pod on the tree in summer"

Maybe sweet chestnut - Castanea sativa?? Fruits would have been globe-shaped "conkers" covered in a close long-ish spines - but probably still pretty small at this time of year. Leaves have toothed edges and are long and pointed as a rule. Does that sound like it?

That's what I came up with when I had a little google...It's just that I must go around with my eyes shut, never having taken any notice of it before.I'm sure that Deer have been nibbling at the bark, that's why the other less mature ones are fenced off and that's what brought it to my attention.
