I'm not very good on freezing fruit or veggies but when my cousin was visiting recently she froze some apples for me, first soaking them in salt water to stop them browning. Has anyone else heard of this. I haven't used the apples yet so what am I to expect when they thaw. Or do I not thaw them and cook them frozen?

LOL .. I usually use lemon juice to stop browning, (also works well on avacados when getting them ready) ......as for using the apples from frozen it shouldn't make any difference ...although personally I'd rinse them under cold water just to clear any lingering saltiness from them and then add a bit of sugar .... an alternative to salt is Ascorbic acid powder available at health shops (not sure about where you are ..... or where I am for that matter!!!) that's why I use lemon juice !!  M-L

Years since we last froze apples but I'm sure we didn't use salt. I think ML is right though and you'll need to rinse the salt off.
We now wrap and store our crop and find they last us into February/March. We also dry and bottle a few jars and these are great for pies etc as well as for mixing with pickings of early rhubarb.

I always use lemon juice to prevent certain fruits or veggies from going brown. Lacking that, I would use vinegar, salt would be my last choice. ML is right, the Ascorbic acid can also be used (I sometimes use it when making jam - depends on the fruit being used). I have never frozen apples raw, I peel, core and chop them and then simmer until tender. For applesauce I chop them finely, for compott roughly.

Thanks, M-L, Dave and K-G .. hey, like the avatar. That must be your baby? Put pics of my soon to be mine up last night in Pets Corner.

So, Dave, you just store yours whole? Wrapped in paper in a shed / garage? I thought it was odd when my cousin did this salt thng but she assured me you couldn't taste he salt ... we'll see when I decide to use the apples! [IMG] I just make up applesauce fresh as and when I need it using the microwave.

Yes, this is my darling and guess what his name is? Gato! We brought him from Portugal 14 years ago as a baby. I'll put that story up in the Cats Corner soon.
