i,m thinking of growing some onions and shallots in a 3foot by 4foot by 2foot deep container.
    will it be
    a.big enough and deep enough
b.ok to use compost in the container or will i have to get hold of some top soil
    thanks in advance ;)

As long as you don't want to grow loads it should be ok, I think the norm for sets is about 4" apart and a foot between rows probably more space for shallots

My January sown onions which were started in the green house, then moved to a cold frame three weeks ago, should acording to the packet be ready fo hardening off now, but as the weather is still very cold is there a risk of bolting later if they go out now?

I would be inclined to leave them in the cold frame, but open the lid during the day for a couple of weeks, plant them out at he end of april, weather permitting
