I took half a day to remove one in spring, and destroyed a cheapo garden fork in the process. The base was 3'6" diameter but the leaves had killed everything below it to 7' across. I'm afraid I don't know how old it was, a minimum of 6yrs I'd have thought.

I now hate pampass grass with a passion tryign to dig one one and all cut in the process.

Stick to small dwarf grasses unless you never intend taking out your pampass grass.

You need a lot of room for one never mind 4 they grow tall and expand .

    Good luck.

Good point by Scotkat - gloves, long sleeved shirt and sharp, solid shears are all required, not optional. I quite like them, so long as they're in other peoples gardens.

    Thankyou oh wise ones,

Me thinks I will give it away (to a garden centre - they can be responsible for inflicting the pretty but trifid like stuff on others :D ).

Wondered why it was sooooo cheap on ebay, now i know

I can easily dig up the first one as it has only been in for three weeks, could always transplant to front garden but does it need sun or will it grow in shade?

Front is as big as the back, there's nothing out there right now so it would be a solution for one of the pampas perhaps [IMG]

I was told to literally burn mine down every few years by a friend who does just that whenever his gets out of hand. Apparently within a couple of years it comes back at a more managable size.

    John

P.S. Make sure it is not too near the house - LOL.

P.P.S. Apparently it likes sun but will take partial shade.

I dug one out four years ago and put it on the drive meaning ti take it up the tip. It's still there standing on concrete, looking healthy as ever and still producing plumes.

    Any takers?
