    I know this will be extrememly unhelpful, but have you seen the film 'Invasion of the body snatchers'. If people in your neighbourhood start acting strange, get out of there!

    Look at this, I took it at Westonbirt Arboretum on monday and I had to look at the tree label -- Magnolia, this one is Sprengeri maybe similar to yours.

    Thank you......Yes I was wondering whether we were being invaded!! and what was going to 'hatch' out of the pod!!!

    A Magnolia Soulangiana in my front garden occasionally has seed pods just like that. If left on the tree bright scarlet beans on threads will hang out of it. I have instructions for treating and sowing the beans if anybody is interested.
