    Hi all,

I have two questions if anyone has any info please.

    1. I have lovely fuschias which flowered beautifully last year and we have been "promised" snow soon, what can I do to make sure the cold snap doesn't kill them now.

    2. I have a large brick retaining wall which faces west with the south side being the house wall so not much light unitl afternoon I have attached trellising and would like to put some large containers with good climbers which have large coverage and vigorous growth.

    Many thanks

    Mimi

    Are these outdoor fuchsias Mimi?

If outdoors they should be ok but you could pile up earth around the crown of the bush just as extra protection...if these are in pots then they would probably be ok on a windowsill (double glazed)if in the house...if in a greenhouse unheated then either take them in for a week or so or wrap some extra protection around the pots, either fleece or bubblewrap during the coldest spell

If the trellis does get some sun in the afternoon maybe a clematis, passion flower, climbing rose?

    Thanks Steve,

The fuschia are outdoor and are well potted and have stones on top so the crown is well protected so maybe they'll be O.K.

As to the trellis, I already have a clematis montana and climbing roses but need something which will cover more quickly and hopefully be evergreen as the others are twiggy at the moment.

    Thanks for the advice

There are some nice variegated ivies that keep their leaves all year and the variegated types are not as bad as the bog standard green types that take over

hi Mimi I alway6s take cuttings in Autumn, of something you not quite sure about and you may have 3 - 6 more following year, not sure if yours were the hardy type.
Try Eccremocarpus scaber, Chilian glory flower, as a mixer in with your climbers, lovely orange bells, once established can cover a large wall and bigger every yesr, but need good drainage and south facing.

    Thanks for all your tips,

I think I'll give it a few more weeks then go down to the garden centre with my wish list from you guys.

    Thanks again
