I have planted this outside through gravel. The new leaves are lush and green but after a while go a yellowy brown.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Did you plant it out when the weather was still cold? although said to be hardy a young plant can still get affected by cold

they also like soil to be on the acid side and they don't like wet soil or winds....we could do with some good hot weather to help it get established

    Hi SteveW

    I planted it last June.

Although it is planted behind the house, sheltered from the worst winds, it still gets blown about.

I've only fed it twice, perhaps I should do it more

    Good site!

I've come to the conclusion, that the weather's a bit too harsh way up here.

I'll keep giving it tlc and maybe some winter protection and see how it goes.

    Thanks for your help.

How big is it Tintin? Was it one of those fairly large plants in a small pot?
I think it should be hardy enough to do well up there, I believe they do grow in Scotland pretty well. The leaves take on a yellowy green colour in winter anyway, mine do.

Its just a foot now and I don't remember the pot being particularly small. I got it by post from a palm place somewhere down south.

Oh that should be OK then I just thought it might be one of those 4ft tall palms you see for sale in a 10 in pot that was obviously grown elswhere then potted up.
If its only a foot tall then it may well need winter protection, as you say, they get hardier with age.
Have all last years leaves gone brown?

Yes, The ends go yellow first then spread down the leaves and there's also lots of brown mottling and a bit of shredding. Its not looking particularly pretty! Now there are 2 new leaves coming in the centre which are lushly green.

They might be OK then, if they start to die off you've got a problem. Perhaps it was just winter damage.

I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks all for the advice.

This is great being able to ask questions that I can't find the answers to in all my books.
