Eh? Wots he on about now?
Regional variations for the same items must confuse the heck out of foreigners.
When I moved to yorkshire they looked at me in disgust when I asked for a cob. Never thought about it before but there must be lots of things we call different names in different areas. I hadn't a clue when I was asked if I'd ever had a scuffler, I didn't know if I should be offended or worried. Apparently it's a triangular bread roll but I wasn't to know that.

Anyone else had a regional pastry diplomacy issue?

    Oh Yes.

Working in Bristol some years ago we took our labourer on after the job to work on a Church in Glostershire.

He'd never been out of Bristol before as far as I could work out, so when it came to lunch time at the chip shop he demanded "Fish Lot"

There was a moment of silence.

    "I'm sorry ?"

    "Fish Lot"

    "I'm Sorry, I don't understand your order:what:"

    "FISH LOT !"

Me, "Hey Vic, we're not in Bristol anymore"

Vic, "Oh bugger. Fish and Chips with salt and vinegar please"

In the Northwest of England cobs and baps are known as Barm Cakes . This causes some confusion when you ask a visitor if they want a barm cake for lunch , you receive a puzzled look

You just can't beat a floury barm cake - having travelled around a bit and through trial and indigestion NOWHERE in Britain does barm cakes like 'wot they do up north' (I was 'brung up' there). They do not even exist anywhere else even under a different name - yes the supermarkets sell them in packs and they are labelled barm cakes but anybody who has sampled the real thing will tell you they are nowhere near. mmmmmm chip barms - yum and....in Chorley they do pasty barms..... bit more difficult to eat but then their pasties are not as big as the Cornish ones here! :heehee:

Anybody ever had Goosnargh Seed Cake - or Kendal Mint cake?
These also are not what they appear to be!::WINK1:
