Can anyone tell me please, why I tend to be shown as offline when I'm on. Some of my threads come up as showing yesterday when I've posted them minutes before and also the time is completely wrong. Is it my head that's got the bugs!

My gut instinct tells me that the web server or the database server (which may be the same physical box) is not in the UK, and so the time that shows is the time as it is wherever the server is physically located. On web stuff, date/time stamps happen at the web server, and completely ignore the settings on the local machine. That would affect all users.

If its only affecting some users (I haven't really taken much notice) then my gut instinct would be that the timezone is wrong in the affected members' profiles.

EDIT: Yep, my post, created at 23:19 my time, shows as 12:19. I reckon the server is in a different timezone.

EDIT 2: Nope, the host is in the UK. It's still possible that their servers are abroad (the host might be a UK based reseller) but it doesn't appear to be a local timezone issue. I still reckon the timezone setting is wrong on the server though, or a config error on the forum software. Timezones are the suspect to me though.

    Thanks Clueless,

I'm on the Isle of Man, which so far I've not been aware of a difference in time zone. :WINK1: But I'll see what else I can think of.

Meanwhile can I point out (I'm nitpicking) The island is not part of the UK, having it's own government (Tynwald). We are addressed British Isles. :)

No I think it might be affecting everyone.

I know the IoM is not part of the UK, its one of my favourite 'did you know' things:) But its in the same time zone as the UK. Also, I know you're not nitpicking, but if we were to nitpick, I'm not sure about the 'United' bit. Wales and Scotland have been trying to break free from westminster for a long time, there was a proposal (probably a half serious joke) a few years ago that Yorkshire gets its own government, Cornwall flies its own flag, and up north there is a long running joke that the M25 should be made into a moat:) Also despite the war of the roses being centuries ago, in parts of Yorkshire you still encounter some friendly rivalry towards Lancashire and vice versa. Still, its a funny old world:)

Perhaps the Uk should be dissolved and we can make Great Britain - great again!

Getting back to my bugs. My son, who knows a hell of a lot more than me about computers says the time problem is probably down to the server. Having said that, I've noticed it's about an hours difference, could that be to do with our summer/winter time clock changes.

Yep, definitely the server. As I said before web apps don't care what time your computer says it is, they base the time on what the server says. The clock is wrong on the server, or any time adjustment to take into account time zones is wrong on the forum configuration.

Another bug is where text is separated by a space from a column of figures in a Thread and then when posted both get drawn together as has happened in some of mine.

    Thanks Armandii,

It's bad enough sorting out bugs in the garden, but I can deal with those. Computer bugs for me are a whole different ball game! :what: :)

According to urban legend, computer errors are called bugs because decades ago, a computer program didn't work as planned. All the boffins scrutinised every line of code but couldn't see anything wrong. In the end a technician found an insect inside a vacuum tube (a valve). There was in theory no way it could have got there as valves are sealed units, but there it was and it was stopping a valve working properly, and therefore stopping the program from working properly.

Sorry, that doesn't help the current thread, but I thought it might be interesting.

But on a more serious note gardeners corner is hosted on Planet servers in Houston Texas. Planet servers are amongst the fastest there are.

Summer time or daylight saving cause these time difference issues that can be adjusted by admin here in the admin panel of the site and also by individual users too...this then accounts for all users internationally. Its a quick fix for either admin or user and generally only needs doing twice a year.

    Steve...:)

If a software fault is a bug, is the person who fixes it a bu**er ?:loll:
