Young Atticus L sent me some Cucumber seeds. Never grown The Devils Vegetable before but can't resist it if I have some seed, i've got to plant it.

They are just flowering, remind me again, do I need to polinate them or do I have to stop them getting polinated to stop them tasting bitter.

Not that it matters to me as I won't be the one eating them, but Sis likes them.

There's been lots of cucumber threads on the forum (me included), depends what type and where you are growing them ziggy? I'm growing suttons "Market More" an outdoor ridge cucumber, the two plants outside in the cloche I'm not polinating coz they have plenty of insects around, the two plants in the sitting room I am polinating myself (due to lack of insects in my sitting room)

I've read other comments on the internet saying remove male flowers after polination to stop them tasting bitter, and other comments disagreeing:DOH:I'll know in an hour or so when we "test eat" our first fruit, its only just over 6 inches but the kids and I are itching to munch it, so I'll let you know:WINK1:

You need outdoor ridge types to get pollinated.

The greenhouse types, (the ones that tend to look like the ones you buy), in general, should not be allowed to pollinate.

    Cheers Lads,

Been trying to remember the name of it all day, thought it was something begining with "A"

I was right, it was Wautoma:DOH:

Looked at the site Atticus got it from,

Great Vegetable Seeds from The Real Seed Catalogue

Says I don't need to take the male flowers off it:thumbsup:

Worth looking round that site, some interesting stuff there.

Found another site of a similar name,

Not sure if I'd class it as being devilish Zig but they do have a repetitive effect on me. So, I'm growing a Burpless variety this year.:heehee: Let's hope it works.

Ive been on both those sites Ziggy, got some really cool cucumber type things (exploding cucumber, which is going crazy, west Indian gherkin which is just getting going and mini white cucus, also just getting going) and some yellow mange tout (about to flower).

The second site was blocked on my works computer so I HAD to have a closer look when i got home!! lol

Is this some unusual type of cucumber or something?

I know that a chemical in cucumber skin is a common allergen but I've never had any bother with it.

        Hi Skinmonkey,

Exploding cucumber sounds fantastic, does that mean I wouldn't have to eat them:heehee:

Sorry, I do love growing different things, even if I don't like them, there is usually one of the extended tribe that will like them.

Couldn't believe the second site:rolleyespink: Do purchasers really think that the police are not monitoring that:what:

        Ha ha,

I like to grow unusual things to, and not a big fan of cucumbers, the exploding cucumber looked like lots of fun (they say you should wear eye protection when harvesting it) and it's supposed to taste like green pepper rather than cucumber.......time will tell.

And if i recall its nice and legal to sell hemp seeds but not so legal to grow them, so I'm sure that site is just for good law abiding citizens that like to collect the seed - yeh right.

I likes Himlayan Balsam, the edible seed pods explode in your mouth. The look on the kids faces is priceless, the first time they try them:tomato:

interesting reading Himalayan Balsam Invasive Weed Eradication
          Himalayan Balsam – The Law

Although listed by the Environment Agency as an invasive species, there are no specific laws, but adjoining owners could take civil action seeking damages due to excessive spread of plants onto their land.

Never knew that I/you could end up in court over a weed:what:

There is a certain weed popular with hippys that would definately end you up in court:D

Apart from that, its illegal to propagate Giant Hogweed, if you have Ragwort on your land you are not allowed to let it set seed (Although many do)

Without looking it up, I would imagine there is a bit of legislation about Japanese Knotweed too.:parsnip:
