I am planning to plant something in a pot as a memorial to my lovely dog Rosie. She has been dead now for over a year, and I am only just starting to be able to think about an appropriate way to remember her. She loved to lie outside in the garden, and often couldn't be persuaded to come indoors. I originally wanted to plant a rose for her, obviously, as she was called Rosie, and she was beautiful, like roses. I also think she had a lovely scent (my Rosie, that is), so a scented plant that I could smell and think of her would be lovely.

Lately I have changed my mind again - roses don't look great all year round, and I don't know how happy they are in pots? I do have some lovely David Austin roses in the garden already, so it would 'go' with the garden generally.

Does anyone have suggestions for a plant that might work (non-roses will be considered)?

Does anyone have suggestions for a rose that might be happy in a pot? Also, how big would the pot have to be?

Suggestions would have to match my lovely girl in elegance and beauty.

ETA: It has to be in a pot so we can always take it with us when we move. We're unlikely to stay here for long.

How about Christmas Box (Sarracocca), my new favourite plant. A beautiful and slow growing shrub that is in flower now and remains evergreen all year round?

She looks like she was a lovely dog x

Hi Rosiemongrel There is a R/Rose named Rosie,If that might help:)

    -------------------------------------------------------------
Or there is a Hebe named Rosie
The first pink flowered hardy Hebe introduced to the European trade. Bred and selected by John Tooby in Worcestershire and named after his grand daughter. Hebe Rosie grows to 2.5-3 feet with a 3-4 foot spread after 4 years. A light trim in early spring to encourage new growth a greater flower initiation will help ensure a healthy and long lived evergreen garden plant. Rosie is extremely free flowering with deep pink flowers from late May to first frosts.

Thank you for the suggestions. It had not occurred to me that there might be plants actually called Rosie - what a lovely idea. What is a R/Rose? And could it live in a pot, do you think?

Off now to have a look at pictures of Sarracocca online.

Keep the ideas coming - it's nice to have a range to choose from.

What I don't want is to have a plant in a pot which dies. :( That would be too sad. :(

I agree with Aaron's suggestion: Christmas Box also has a wonderful scent at this time of year.
