Hi I am wanting a pair of iron gates that are 10 feet wide, nothing fancy and they don't even need to be new, and can be up to 5ft high, I have found some online at £135 delivered but is there any cheaper options out there?

You could see if there are any training companies in the area that teach steel fabrication.

20 years ago, I did a steel fabrication course as one of those employment training schemes they used to do for people who were out of work. The government funding for the centre was nowhere near enough to cover their running costs, so we used to make stuff to sell in the company shop. Only the stuff that was up to standard went to the shop, everything else would be cut up and used for basic welding/cutting/fettling practice, and the stuff we sold went at a fraction of the price of the main retailers.

That was 20 years ago though. Things might have changed since then, but worth checking out.

I reckon that sounds like a bargain Keith.

I have a mate that will do bespoke gates (security aspects if required - cameras etc.) - It'll cost more than £135 though. A guy does have to eat you know.

The metal alone without the labour will cost more than that
Check out the delivery price first though

That sounds achievable as I just got a price of £141.50 for two (not a pair with one 'handed') for 5 feet wide a 1.5 metres high gates like these (excluding posts & fittings) including £50 courier charge and VAT:

Clueless1's suggestion is certainly worth following up, but as Jack McH says, the metal alone could cost £135.

Alternatively, if the gates haven't to be too posh, might be worth trying farm supply companies who may stock or could have made up field gates.

Preloved | used driveway gates gates and fencing for sale UK and Ireland

also check your local auction houses .... many bargains to be found ....

I found an Etesia Pro 53 lawnmower this morning .... have placed a phone bid of £72 .... will phone at 4pm to find out if I have won (lady says that it should go on auction at approx 15h30 .... not sure if it works, but from the photo, everything looks as though it's there and they don't do a condition report ....

worth approx £2k new, so if I am lucky, don't mind spending a couple of hundred for a full service

Keith, are you sure it's iron gates you want or steel. Iron gates will cost you a lot more than £135 pounds, unless you can pick them up second hand.

next time will do a phone bid live .... but saying that, £150 plus VAT is a very good price (assuming it works)

going rate on ebay during winter for an ex council Etesia mower is just over £200 ... and then you can make sure it works before bidding
