Would anybody know if it's possible to lock somebody out of your e-mails please? A member of my family is being harrassed by somebody from the past. Or will that person have to change their address?

Mark them as spam then they won't see the offending emails anymore.

As far as I know , no, you can't (as you put it) "Lock somebody out of your email" If you could, no one would get spam.

BUT, (assuming its outlook distress) why not go

      message>block sender

Then all from that person will go into the bin.

OR if its web based mail (one where you have to go to a website and see what you have) they often have a spam button / feature and you mark the mail you don't want as spam.

just looked at my Outlook 2010, if you right click on the email, then select 'junk' then 'block sender'. It might be different in older versions of Outlook.

Blocking the emails as mentioned by others is how I'd go about it, but you could also take a bit more action if you feel it necessary.

If its harrassment from someone you know, then depending on the circumstances, it might be worth contacting their ISP and telling them what's happening.

There is a piece of law called the Misuse of Computers Act 1990, which covers this type of thing. It will never get to court, but its always useful to know that the law is their as a stick to wave.

Copy their e mail address and apply for everything. Insurance, freecycle, dating sites etc. they will be too busy clearing their inbox to mail anyone.

As long as the emailer in question ALWAYS uses the same email address then you can add them to your blocked list - as JWK suggests. Right click, go to Junk MAil and select the" add to Blocked Senders List" option. - job done.

The reason Spam mail is so difficult to stop is that each email has a different sender address. It makes it very difficult to block.

        Thanks all,

CC what you say is not an option. I have to be careful how much I say here but, this person is an ex boyfriend from four years ago and from time to time he makes contact, she doesn't reply. He is also ex police and has mental issues.

I think I'll decline that offer, but thanks anyway.

If she doesn't want to 'block' she'll have to consider changing her e-mail address. :)

I can do it here .. not for you obviously but for me. I can't explain it because I am on a Portuguese system but I have two friends (one in the States and one here) whose systems have been hacked and I started getting porn/undesireable posts from them. The Stateside friend is known to me for 40+ years and the Portugal one is a teenage daughter of a friend of mine so I KNOW it is not them.

If I right click on the particular post I get up a menu which says I do not want these posts or want them deleted before I see them. Surely there must be something similar there?

That would be email spoofing. It is quite probably the easiest way to abuse an email system, and until fairly recently, there was very little from a technical perspective that anyone could do about it.

The weakness was/is that the sending mail server includes the sender's email address in the message, but doesn't check it.

The newest servers use a protocol that checks that the specified sender's email address is on the same domain as where the message came from. Far from foolproof, but far better than older, yet still mainstream systems.
