I have been with my present back since 1975. They have always been of the highest order of pleasantness and courtesy to deal with. As a general rule I do all my banking either online or via the call centre.

Last year they decided to send all their customers a little gizmo like a very small calculator. You had to put your bank card into this and log in. Then, logged into your bank account, you got two groups of four numbers which you had to key into the gizmo which in turn gave you two groups of four numbers. You put these into the online account to verify the transaction youjust tried to make. It was a bit of a fiddle at first but I got used to it and then quite liked the extra level of security. The one day it was gone! So I rang the call centre to ask why and was told they'd been inundated with complaints from customers who'd complained it was too complicated and just too much of a fiddle! All that money they spent on issuing these gizmos and they weren't in use more than about six months!

But on another topic, on 28th Dec, I went into into a branch the other day to get something date stamped. I was met by a bossy young lady in her twenties who proceeded to explain to me in very condescending tones and an extremely loud voice why what I wanted wasn't possible. Then I was asked to wait - I thought for the advisor who was already dealing with another customer at a nearby desk. This customer eventually left as did the advisor. Still I waited while this other lassie flitted about the bank, tidying papers and chatting to the counter staff. After TWENTY MINUTES she came back to me and held out her hand for the papers saying "okay, tell me where you want this signed and I'll do it"!!!!

Needless to say I rang and complained when I got home. I was told they would forward my complaint to 'the appropriate department'. I asked if I couldn't speak with them direct and was told no. But he needed an 'idea' if what the complaint was about so briefly I gave him that idea. No detail, just that I hadn't been too pleased with the way I was treated. I gave him my phone number and he said someone would phone me the next day to discuss it with me.

On the 30th and again on the 3rd Jan I'd had no call and rang to say so. Then, on 11th Jan, I received a letter (dated 3rd) telling me this
"Your concerns will be investigated by a case handler and the outcome will be sent to you as soon as possible"!!!!

I was speechless and am about to change banks. It's now 3 weeks and I've not heard a thing from them!

ok ... had a quick count (too many noughts for me)

        13 notes of 500 000

        55 notes of 25 000

        54 notes of 1000

works out to 7 929 000 old drachmas

not sure whats that worth in pounds or euros and perhaps its like zimbabwe money ?

edit .... have just converted with the link given .... you divide by 340.750

that works out to 23 269.25 euros

        and on xe.com:

        23,269.25 EUR=19,256.51 GBP

Daisees, I might be able to get hold of your bank's customer services email address for you. The banks normally don't give out email addresses but I have managed to get some in the past when I've been dealing with consumer complaints.

Of course, the way you've been treated I wouldn't be surprised if you just changed banks and told them to stuff it!! :heehee:

The Bank I'm with used to have branches that combined the Bank and Estate Agents which I supposed made good economic and business sense having two such areas side by side. Well, that is it did....until the Recession. Then the Bank decided to cut costs and withdrew from the arrangement with the Estate Agents and sold the premises off nationwide. That meant in some towns, like the nearest one to me, the street presence of the Bank vanished along with the "Hole in the Wall" cash machine.:gaagh::gaagh: My nearest Branch is now over 12 miles away, meaning a round trip of over 24 miles. Now if I want a casual withdrawal I use the "money back option" facility offered by the Supermarkets. So where's the service and convenience of a Bank gone??:dunno::scratch:

bad news .... spoke to a guy called Paul who is at the London branch ... he says that they are not redeemable as they are pre-1980's ... (my grandfather died in the 1960's) ...

they are only exchaning the drachmas that were issued from the 1980's and he says no bank will accept or exchange them

thats what was told to me previously by the bank of greece in London (found the old scrap of paper that I jotted notes on when I spoke to them a while back)

Paul in London says that that was a heck of a lot of money in the 1960's ....

goes to show .... always include stuff like that in your will .... my grandfather hid the money away from my grandmother, as she used to spend all the money on stuff which was not really needed
