In the Amateur Gardening Magazine there was article about the below books coming out, which I thought some of us might be interested in:

"HOW TO CREATE AN ECO GARDEN: Interest in "green gardening" has never been greater and this 160 page guide by "earth friendly" Gardener John Walker offers achievable gardening ideas aimed at minimising our carbon footprints. Topics include eco garden basics, harvesting sunlight and rain, and bio-diversity. There's even a directory of eco friendly plants. Price: £14.99p

AURICULAS - AN ESSENTIAL GUIDE: Whether on display at flower shows or proudly exhibited in theatres, Auriculas has legions of fans. Author Paul Dorey offers a monthly guide to cultivation, advice on composts and fertilisers, plus a look at pests and diseases. Readers will also benefit from instructions on how to build a Auricula theatre and a cold frame.
    Price: £19.95p.

THE EASY FRUIT GARDEN: Rising food prices have been hitting shoppers at the tills and fruit is no exception. However, many gardeners are put off growing fruit by a lack of knowledge and time. The Easy Fruit Garden aims to change that by offering clear instructions. It explains simple short cuts, low maintenance strategies and is written to inspire novices but still appeal to more experienced growers. Price: £16.99p.

Obviously, the prices are recommended retail prices and I am sure that the books can be found at lower prices should anyone be interested.

Sorry to slightly veer off the book topic...but whilst I seem to have the attention of a couple of auricula fans...is there any chance that anybody can help me identify this one?!

          Facebook

I only seem to have this photo on Facebook, I assume it's OK to put the link here. I love this little auricula and it just gets better and better every year!

Hmmm. I'm struggling with this here! The photo I want to show you, is in an album on Facebook. Unfortunately, I no longer have the photo anywhere else. I thought I'd managed to put it on here...then realised I could only see it whilst I was logged in to my FB account. I know how to 'share' the whole album it's in, but don't want to put that on here and can't work out how to either download the file to then upload or put a link to the individual photo.

Maybe I'll have to wait till it flowers this year!

If you have Windows 7 as your operating system, then you can Snip the image from the page, save it in your Pictures folder and then put it on Photobucket. Snip is found in Start : All programs : Acessories.

...oh it's so easy when you have the right type of brain! (or offspring with one)

Anyway, this is the P. auricula I am trying to identify!

I'm by no means and expert but it looks very much like the black and white photo of Auricula 'Lovebird' in the book I've just dug out of the cupboard under the stairs, although it also lookslike quite a few others as well:heehee:

and q quick google image search brings up some very convincing photo's

Thanks Aesculus, yes it does like very like Lovebird...but it just doesn't look exactly the same somehow! There seems to be a fair amount of variation even amongst the flowers of the same variety, (even allowing for the fact the photos are of slightly different stages of opening) Mine's quite green, I did wonder about candida, but once again I'm not convinced. Wish I'd got a label with it!!

Well the new Auricula's book has just arrived from Amazon. Looks beautiful so I will sit and read it this evening. Let you know whether it is worth buying or not.

The book is well worth the money.
The Auricula there looks like a large number of White edged greens. Iago is a possibility.
